Bruno Fernandes Criticizes Tactics After Manchester United's Defeat
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes questioned the team's pressing strategy following a heavy 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes voiced open criticism regarding the team's tactical approach following a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday. The loss extended Manchester United's winless streak to seven games across all competitions, leaving the team struggling for form and cohesion early in the campaign.
During the match, Como dominated proceedings, spearheaded by Nico Paz, who contributed two goals and an assist. Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon also scored for Como, while Joshua Zirkzee netted a stoppage-time consolation goal for United. The heavy defeat left the English club searching for answers as their difficult run of fixtures continued.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Fernandes addressed the team's defensive strategy, pointing to instructions from the coaching staff not to press man-to-man. "It's a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little space in behind and try to get the ball in the first moment," Fernandes explained. He added that giving possession away to quality teams allows opponents to gain confidence and forces United to run excessively, leading to fatigue and frustration.
When asked directly if the tactical decisions were wrong, Fernandes stated that such evaluations belong to the manager and staff, though he emphasized a personal desire for a more aggressive approach. "I just said, I think sometimes we have to be more brave on the pressure, trying to take a risk of getting that press very high and making them uncomfortable," he said.
Head coach Michael Carrick faced questions about his team's performance and Fernandes's comments during his post-match press conference. Offering a curt response, Carrick emphasized that defensive systems matter less than basic effort on the pitch. "Whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play, if you don't run, and you don't run forward, and you don't run back, you aren't going to win," Carrick remarked.
Carrick also took full responsibility for the team's poor display and apologized to the 700 traveling supporters who made the trip to Italy. Walking over to the fans after the final whistle, the manager acknowledged the unacceptable nature of the performance and stated that he felt deeply for the supporters during a difficult stretch for the club.
Manchester United currently sits 13th in the Premier League table and faces mounting pressure ahead of their upcoming fixture against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. As scrutiny grows over the squad's performances and tactical direction, both players and coaching staff must quickly find solutions to reverse their downward slide.
