Major Safety Recalls Impact Vehicles and Dairy Products in Germany
Automaker Opel has expanded its airbag recall to over 61,000 vehicles, while Arla Foods issued a precautionary recall for cream cheese rings due to a possible insect infestation.
Consumers in Germany are facing multiple product safety notices, ranging from automotive hazards involving defective airbag inflators to precautionary food withdrawals at major grocery chains. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority, known as the KBA, has overseen a significant expansion of an ongoing vehicle safety campaign, while dairy producer Arla Foods announced the removal of specific cream cheese rings from supermarket shelves.
The automotive safety campaign involves Opel and centers around potentially dangerous airbag inflators manufactured by the Japanese supplier Takata. According to the KBA, the latest expansion affects 61,000 vehicles in Germany across seven model series, including the Astra, Cascada, Meriva, Mokka, Signum, Vectra, and Zafira produced between 2005 and 2017. The defect involves the gas generator, which can degrade over time due to high temperatures and humidity, potentially releasing sharp metal fragments into the cabin upon deployment.
Stellantis, Opel's parent company, has also expanded a strict stop-drive order across Europe for specific older models, including certain Astra H vehicles from 2005 to 2014, as well as Vectra and Signum cars from 2005 to 2008. Owners subjected to the stop-drive instruction are advised to stop driving their vehicles immediately and contact an authorized service partner. The repairs, which involve replacing the faulty airbag inflator, are provided free of charge regardless of vehicle age or warranty status.
The handling of the stop-drive directive has drawn criticism from the ADAC, Germany's largest automobile club. The organization argued that it is often difficult for owners of older vehicles to determine with certainty whether they are permitted to continue driving their cars. The club has called for clearer, more reliably updated online checks via vehicle identification numbers and more direct personal notifications for affected motorists.
In a separate consumer safety action, Arla Foods Deutschland GmbH issued a recall for three decorated cream cheese ring varieties distributed through major retailers such as Aldi, Edeka, Rewe, and Norma. The affected products include the Castello Ananas & Mandel Frischkäse Ring, the Milsani Ananas-Papaya Ring, and the Viking Ananas-Mandel Ring. The voluntary withdrawal was initiated following reports of a possible insect infestation within an almond mixture supplied by an external vendor.
Although the manufacturer stated that the impacted food products are safe to consume, the recall was launched as a precautionary measure to uphold strict food quality standards. Customers who purchased the items with specific best-before dates and the identification mark DK M277 EU are advised not to eat them. Consumers can return the items to their point of purchase to receive a full refund without needing a receipt.
