Liverpool's 100 percent start to the UEFA Champions League season came to an unexpected and crashing end on Wednesday as they turned victory into defeat, losing 3-2 to Fenerbahce at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul. Despite taking the lead twice through goals from 19-year-old Trey Nyoni and substitute Alexander Isak, the visitors were undone by a string of defensive mistakes and poor positioning.

Manager Andoni Iraola watched his team squander their advantages in a chaotic encounter led by Fenerbahce interim coach and former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt. Liverpool initially went ahead in the 24th minute when Nyoni volleyed home from the edge of the box following a cross by Dominik Szoboszlai. However, Fenerbahce equalized before halftime through a heavily deflected free-kick by Mason Greenwood that wrong-footed goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

The English side regained the lead in the second half when Cody Gakpo set up Isak for a header shortly after coming off the bench. Yet, Liverpool's defensive frailties resurfaced quickly. Arch Brown leveled the score at 2-2 following a short corner where Alisson failed to claim the cross cleanly, leaving Brown with an easy tap-in at the back post. The collapse was complete in the 79th minute when substitute Vedat Muriqi out-jumped the visiting defense to head in a looping cross and secure a historic victory for the Turkish side.

Following the match, defender Kostas Tsimikas candidly admitted that his team received what they deserved. "Congratulations to Fenerbahce, they deserve it. We did not play how we had to play. We did not defend after the goal we conceded," Tsimikas told UEFA.com. He added that the squad must improve their marking if they intend to win games moving forward.

The defeat leaves Liverpool with significant defensive concerns after conceding 10 goals across their first four Champions League matches. Iraola expressed his frustration over the defensive structure and individual errors, noting that the team completely lost control of the game during the final ten minutes as they were overrun on the flanks.

Liverpool will now turn their attention back to domestic action as they prepare for a demanding schedule in the Premier League. The Reds face Crystal Palace away on Sunday, followed by a high-profile matchup against Manchester United, before returning to European competition later in the month against Club Brugge.
