Liverpool suffered a chaotic 3-2 defeat against Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul. Despite taking the lead twice during the match, defensive lapses and a late surge from the hosts ended Liverpool's flawless run in the competition and marked their second consecutive loss under manager Andoni Iraola.

Nineteen-year-old Trey Nyoni provided a bright spot for the visitors by delivering a composed performance in midfield. Nyoni opened the scoring in the first half, dispatching a dropping ball with a low volley from the edge of the penalty area that deflected off Kojo Peprah Oppong past goalkeeper Ederson. With the strike, Nyoni became Liverpool's youngest player to score a maiden goal in the Champions League and the second-youngest scorer overall in the competition's history behind Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The match swung dramatically after Liverpool took the lead. Fenerbahce equalized shortly before halftime when former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood scored from a free-kick that ricocheted off teammate Jeremy Jacquet's stomach, leaving goalkeeper Alisson wrongfooted and visibly frustrated with the defensive wall.

The second half mirrored the first as Liverpool reclaimed the lead just three minutes after manager Iraola made a triple substitution in the 66th minute. Substitute Cody Gakpo floated a cross to the left wing for fellow substitute Alexander Isak, who immediately headed past Ederson to put the visitors ahead 2-1.

However, the lead evaporated four minutes later due to lax defending. Following a corner, N'Golo Kante delivered a cross that Gakpo inadvertently flicked away from Alisson's grasp, allowing Archie Brown to tap in an easy equalizer at the back post. The home side completed the comeback moments later when Vedat Muriqi outjumped three defenders in the penalty area to plant a header into the bottom corner.

The encounter featured several controversial officiating moments led by French referee Clement Turpin. Earlier in the match, Fenerbahce had strong penalty appeals waved away after Kostas Tsimikas pushed Greenwood with two hands inside the area, a decision supported by the video assistant referee. Tempers flared throughout the hostile atmosphere, resulting in a yellow card for interim Fenerbahce boss Dirk Kuyt for his protests over the penalty incident.

The defeat leaves Liverpool searching for defensive answers following a demanding stretch of fixtures. Iraola's side will need to regroup quickly as they look to correct the defensive vulnerabilities that proved costly in Istanbul before returning to domestic and European action.
