Lions Hand Vikings First Loss of Season with Late 19-15 Comeback
Detroit rallied behind Jahmyr Gibbs and Jared Goff to overcome Minnesota and snap their six-game winning streak.
The Minnesota Vikings suffered their first defeat of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling 19-15 to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. With the loss, Minnesota dropped to 6-1, ending the NFL's last remaining undefeated run and bringing Detroit back into the thick of the NFC North division race at 5-2.
For much of the contest, the Vikings' offense struggled to sustain momentum under quarterback Kyler Murray. Despite taking a brief 15-12 lead in the fourth quarter following a 51-भाग pass to Jordan Addison and an 8-yard touchdown connection with T.J. Hockenson, Minnesota could not hold on as the game entered its closing minutes.
Murray finished the afternoon completing 17 of 29 pass attempts for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. He also led the Vikings on the ground with 35 rushing yards on four carries, but his overall performance left the offense searching for answers following weeks of inconsistent play.
The Lions mounted their winning drive late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Jared Goff found a wide-open Jameson Williams for a 4-yard touchdown pass with just 4:35 remaining on the clock. Goff completed 18 of 25 passes for 176 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, while running back Jahmyr Gibbs powered the ground game with 153 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
Detroit's victory came at a high cost, however, as the team lost several key defensive starters to injuries. Linebacker Jack Campbell suffered a scary neck injury in the fourth quarter after a collision with a teammate, requiring him to be loaded onto a stretcher and transported to a local hospital, leaving his teammates visibly emotional on the field.
Frustration appeared to spill over within the Vikings' ranks as well. Star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who caught five passes for 33 yards and a touchdown, declined to speak with reporters after the game. Jefferson was visibly agitated throughout the matchup, showing visible signs of frustration with several of Murray's throws and the offense's inability to maintain rhythm.
Minnesota now faces a difficult stretch ahead as they prepare to host Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football in Week 9. Meanwhile, the Lions look to build on their three-game winning streak as they turn their attention toward a matchup with the Miami Dolphins.
