Detroit Lions Wide Receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown Exits And Returns in Week 8
Detroit Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown briefly left Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings to undergo a concussion evaluation after hitting his head on the turf.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown generated major concern during the first quarter of Sunday's Week 8 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field when he suffered an injury after a hard fall in the end zone. St. Brown hauled in what was initially ruled a touchdown catch, but the play was overturned following a review because of a bobble. On the play, television broadcasts and spectators could see his head hit the turf hard.
Following the overturned touchdown, St. Brown left the field accompanied by an NFL official wearing a red hat, which indicated he needed to be evaluated under the league's concussion protocol. Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News reported that the standout pass catcher headed back to the locker room after the play was reversed.
Prior to his departure from the contest, St. Brown had recorded two receptions for 11 yards. Before the Week 8 game, the 27-year-old receiver had already established himself as one of the league's top targets, ranking sixth in the NFL through the first seven weeks with 46 catches.
The evaluation did not keep the star wideout sidelined for long. Shortly after the Lions kicked a field goal to take a 3-0 lead, St. Brown walked back to the sideline wearing his helmet while the Vikings were on offense. Cameras also captured him sitting on the bench with a wrap on his left knee.
As soon as the Lions regained possession early in the second quarter while trailing 7-3, St. Brown returned directly to the game. His quick return provided an immense sigh of relief for the Detroit offense, which relies heavily on his production.
Losing a player of St. Brown's caliber would have dealt a severe blow to the Detroit offense, particularly in a high-stakes divisional game against an undefeated Minnesota squad boasting an elite pass defense. Entering Sunday, the Vikings ranked second in the NFL by allowing an average of just 155 passing yards per game.
Had St. Brown been ruled out due to a concussion, the Lions would have had to lean much more heavily on alternative receiving options such as Jameson Williams, Isaac TeSlaa, Tay Martin, and DeAndre Carter. However, analysts noted that none of those players can completely replicate what St. Brown brings to the field.
St. Brown has been the leading receiver for Detroit in each of his first five professional seasons. In April 2024, he signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension that includes $77 million in guaranteed money and keeps him under contract with the franchise through the conclusion of the 2028 season.
