Lion City Sailors Prepare for Rematch Against Adelaide United in AFC Champions League Two

The Singaporean club aims to secure a second consecutive victory over the Australian side to strengthen their position in Group F.

The Lion City Sailors are set to host Adelaide United at the Jalan Besar Stadium on November 5, following a historic victory in their previous Asian Champions League Two (ACL2) encounter. The Singaporean side currently sits at the top of Group F with seven points, while Adelaide United trails by one point, making the upcoming match a pivotal moment for both teams in the race for the knockout stages.

In their last meeting on October 29 at Coopers Stadium in Australia, the Sailors secured a 2-0 win. The match remained scoreless for much of the contest until Hugo Gomes broke the deadlock in the 80th minute. Deep into stoppage time, substitute Lennart Thy sealed the victory with a second goal, marking the first time a Singaporean club has defeated an A-League team on Australian soil.

Adelaide United coach Airton Andrioli acknowledged that his team did not perform to their usual standards during the first leg. He noted that the squad was fortunate to reach halftime with a 0-0 scoreline, as the Sailors created several dangerous opportunities throughout the match. Despite the loss, Adelaide goalkeeper Joshua Smits expressed confidence in his team's ability to bounce back, stating that the squad has a plan and remains focused on their objectives.

For the Sailors, the victory in Australia served as a significant statement of intent. Coach Mark Jackson, who previously led the Central Coast Mariners to a treble, praised his players for their courage and tactical execution. Jackson emphasized that repeating the performance against a strong opponent like Adelaide would reinforce the club's development and their aspirations for the remainder of the competition.

A key figure in the Sailors' recent success has been goalkeeper Victor Aznar. The Brazilian custodian, who joined the club in August, has been instrumental in the team's defensive efforts, including a critical point-blank save in the final minutes of the match in Adelaide. Aznar, who previously played for Cadiz CF, has quickly adapted to his new environment despite a coaching change shortly after his arrival.

As the return fixture approaches, the stakes remain high for both clubs. With the top two teams in Group F advancing to the round of 16, a win for the Lion City Sailors would put them on the brink of qualification. Conversely, Adelaide United is under pressure to secure a result to keep their continental campaign on track, as the group remains tightly contested with BG Pathum United and Tai Po also competing for advancement.
