Lando Norris Wins Brazilian Grand Prix as Mercedes Secures Constructors Title
McLaren driver Lando Norris triumphed in a rain-affected Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos, while Mercedes clinched their ninth Formula 1 constructors championship.
McLaren's Lando Norris drove a controlled and masterful race to win the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace on Sunday, crossing the finish line 14.6 seconds ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen. The race, held in shifting and challenging weather conditions at Interlagos, featured strategic pivots and drama from the opening corner to the final lap, marking Norris's third victory of the season and the 14th of his Formula 1 career.
Despite starting from pole position, Norris experienced a sluggish getaway that allowed newly crowned world champion Kimi Antonelli to seize the lead at Turn 1. Liam Lawson also found a gap through the Senna Esses to briefly push Norris back to third. However, Norris steadily clawed back his positions as the track conditions evolved and the opening stint developed.
Antonelli's early advantage unraveled on lap 20 when the 20-year-old Mercedes driver spun at the first corner following suspected suspension issues, handing the outright lead back to Norris. Shortly before Antonelli's mistake, his teammate George Russell had also spun while exiting the pit lane, losing significant time before working his way back through the field.
Max Verstappen produced a remarkable comeback drive after starting 21st on the grid due to penalties for a power unit change. Although a slow reaction time off the line and early traffic hindered his initial progress, Verstappen sliced through the field rapidly. The Red Bull pit wall eventually issued team orders for Isack Hadjar to yield third place, freeing Verstappen to chase Norris before late rain intervened.
Late rain forced the field to switch back to intermediate tires on lap 63 of 71. Despite pressing with fresher rubber in the closing laps, Verstappen could not bridge the gap, leaving Norris to take the checkered flag comfortably clear. Isack Hadjar secured the final step of the podium in third place, despite facing a late challenge from George Russell.
Russell finished fourth and Antonelli recovered to cross the line in fifth place, securing enough points for Mercedes to clinch the 2026 FIA Formula 1 Constructors' Championship. The feat completes a championship double for Mercedes alongside Antonelli's drivers' crown secured a week earlier in Mexico City, marking the Silver Arrows' first constructors' title since 2021.
Following the race, newly crowned champion Antonelli received a five-second time penalty for an unsafe release in the pit lane involving Alpine's Franco Colapinto. Because Antonelli held a large margin over sixth-place finisher Oscar Piastri, the penalty did not alter his final fifth-place classification. Formula 1 will now head to the Las Vegas Strip Circuit on November 22 for the next round of the season.
