Kimi Antonelli penalized after Brazilian Grand Prix as Mercedes clinches title

The newly crowned Formula 1 world champion secured fifth place in Interlagos despite a late pitlane penalty.

Formula 1 world champion Kimi Antonelli faced post-race scrutiny at the Brazilian Grand Prix in Interlagos, where Mercedes officially clinched its ninth constructors' championship. Lando Norris claimed a convincing victory in the race, while Antonelli crossed the finish line in fifth place overall despite battling a difficult car and a turbulent afternoon on the track.

Following the race, the FIA stewards issued a five-second time penalty to Antonelli for an unsafe release in the pitlane. Mercedes released the young Italian directly into the path of Alpine driver Franco Colapinto. Despite the penalty, Antonelli's healthy margin of more than 20 seconds over Oscar Piastri meant the sanction did not affect his fifth-place finishing position in the final classification.

Antonelli's race at Interlagos included several challenging moments. The trouble began before the race even started when he experienced an excursion off the track on his way to the grid. Later, during the grand prix, he reported over the radio to race engineer Peter Bonnington that something felt wrong with his car after suffering multiple steering and handling moments at Turn 1.

The weekend's events come on the heels of Antonelli's historic championship victory. At just 20 years, two months, and seven days old, the Italian driver cemented his status in motorsport history in Mexico City by becoming the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history, surpassing the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel.

Reflecting on his rapid ascent, Antonelli's father, Marco Antonelli, discussed the immense sacrifices and financial hurdles required to reach the pinnacle of motorsport. Drawing from his own unfulfilled racing career due to budget constraints, Marco admitted he initially hoped his son would choose a different path before Mercedes stepped in to support the young driver's prodigious talent a decade ago.

Max Verstappen, speaking about the new champion, praised Antonelli's grounded demeanor and natural talent, joking in his characteristic style that a key difference between them at age 20 is that Antonelli speaks fluent Italian. Verstappen also highlighted the strong mentorship Antonelli received from his father and the crucial backing of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.

The Brazilian Grand Prix podium celebrations and post-race investigations also impacted other drivers on the grid. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc received a five-second penalty for causing a collision with Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson during a battle for seventh place, dropping Leclerc down to eighth in the final results. Additionally, Haas driver Oliver Bearman was penalized for an unsafe pitlane release involving Leclerc, though it left his 17th-place finish unchanged.
