Jeonbuk Hyundai Defeats Johor Darul Ta'zim to Enter ACLE Top Eight

Jeonbuk Hyundai claimed a 2-0 victory over Johor Darul Ta'zim of Malaysia in the fourth match of the AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) league phase on December 3 at Jeonju World Cup Stadium. With this win, Jeonbuk improved its standing from 10th to 8th place, securing a spot within the top eight cut-off for the round of 16.

Entering the match, Johor had built a reputation as a K League killer, holding a strong historical record against South Korean clubs. However, Jeonbuk successfully defended its pride by seizing control of the match from the first half despite early pressure from the visiting side.

The match began with dangerous attacks from Johor, but Jeonbuk goalkeeper Song Bum-keun made crucial saves to keep the opponents scoreless. Jeonbuk suffered an early setback in the 16th minute when defender Yeon Je-woon was forced off due to a left calf injury and replaced by Kim Tae-hyun.

Jeonbuk broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. Following intense pressure that forced a turnover, Kim Jin-gyu delivered a cross from the right flank, and Motta connected with a header to find the back of the net, scoring for the second consecutive match.

Right before the end of the first half, Jeonbuk extended its lead. In stoppage time, Lee Dong-jun was brought down inside the penalty area by the opposing goalkeeper, earning a penalty kick. Italo stepped up and calmly converted the shot, bringing the score to 2-0 before halftime.

In the second half, Johor increased its offensive tempo with sharp passes and continuous attacks, but Jeonbuk maintained a solid defensive organization to keep a clean sheet. Despite several substitution changes by Jeonbuk, including the introduction of Lee Seung-woo, Tiago, and Lee Young-jae, no further goals were scored.

With the win, Jeonbuk moved to a record of two wins, one draw, and one loss, totaling seven points. Meanwhile, Johor suffered its first defeat of the tournament, also holding seven points and sitting in seventh place in the East Asia regional standings.
