Investigation Opened After Grave Found Occupied in Castellammare di Stabia
Authorities are probing how a family-owned burial niche was reassigned to another individual without authorization.
A 43-year-old woman in Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples, discovered that a burial niche she had legally purchased years ago for her family was occupied by the remains of an unknown person. The discovery occurred during a visit to the municipal cemetery, where the woman had arrived to pay her respects to her deceased relatives.
Upon arriving at the site, the woman found a marble headstone bearing the name of a person born in 1938 who passed away on December 4, 2025. The owner, who had not visited the cemetery for exactly one year, immediately reported the incident to the local Carabinieri station. She provided documentation proving her ownership of the space, which she stated had been purchased approximately seven years prior.
The investigation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Torre Annunziata, has already led to the seizure of records from the cemetery's archives. Preliminary findings suggest significant irregularities in the administrative management of the burial space. Reports indicate that the original owner's name in the cemetery's paper records had been crossed out with a blue pen and replaced with the name of the individual currently interred in the niche.
"We reported everything to the police; it was like receiving a punch in the stomach," the owner stated regarding the discovery. "That niche was purchased seven years ago. Now, I doubt everything." The incident has raised serious questions about the security of cemetery records and the potential for illicit management of burial sites within the municipality.
The Prosecutor's Office, led by Prosecutor Nunzio Fragliasso, is currently investigating the possibility of public document forgery and the unauthorized handling of human remains. In response to the situation, the special commissioner of Castellammare di Stabia, Dario Caputo, has initiated an internal inquiry to determine the chain of authorization that allowed for the burial of an unrelated person in a privately held space.
Investigators are meticulously reviewing every bureaucratic step taken between the initial purchase of the niche and the unauthorized interment. This includes verifying the original contract, conducting a forensic analysis of the altered registry entries, and tracing the signatures on the burial permits issued for the deceased individual found in the niche.
The affected family has requested that authorities extend their investigation to neighboring niches to ensure that the remains of their other relatives have not been disturbed or displaced. The case has prompted local concerns regarding the vulnerability of historical paper-based cemetery archives and the transparency of municipal burial services.
