Italian Court Investigation Leads to Arrest in Alleged Pastry Murder Plot
A 76-year-old man was placed under house arrest in Reggio Emilia on charges of premeditated murder involving a restricted food item given to his disabled cousin.
Italian authorities have placed a 76-year-old man under house arrest following an investigation into the death of his 74-year-old disabled cousin in Reggio Emilia. Prosecutors allege that the suspect deliberately provided pastries, specifically a cream-filled doughnut, to his relative in direct violation of a prescribed medical diet, intending to cause harm over an inheritance dispute.
According to investigators, the victim operated under an Individualized Assistance Plan that strictly limited his food intake to blended or fluid items due to previous choking incidents. Court documents state that the suspect, acting as the legal guardian, had previously signed this care plan and was fully aware of the dietary restrictions.
Investigators claim that the suspect left the pastry within reach of the victim before stepping away, and later attempted to offer a carbonated beverage when respiratory distress began instead of immediately alerting medical staff. The facility's management confirmed that the cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation from food aspiration, which led to a complete airway obstruction and subsequent cardiac arrest.
The prosecution's case includes charges of premeditated murder, aggravated by the abuse of guardianship duties, the victim's certified disability, and vulnerable circumstances. While the suspect faces severe charges, legal analysts note that under Italian law, individuals over seventy are generally exempt from pre-trial detention in prison unless exceptional precautionary needs exist.
In a separate development highlighting family advocacy and restorative justice, Salvatore Insenga, the cousin of slain Italian magistrate Rosario Livatino, recently met in Busto Arsizio with two men serving life sentences for the 1990 mafia assassination of the judge. The meeting took place in the Falcone-Borsellino courtroom of the Tribunal with the presence of Milan Archbishop Mario Delpini.
The convicted men, Salvatore Calafato and Paolo Amico, participated in the restorative justice encounter as part of their rehabilitation. Calafato stated during the session that the testimony of Livatino's parents sparked his personal conversion, while Amico expressed a long-held desire to ask for forgiveness for the murder.
Archbishop Delpini praised the encounter as an original and promising approach to criminal justice, emphasizing that transformation remains possible for everyone. Insenga echoed this sentiment regarding the restorative process, stating that "a gunshot cannot be the last word" and describing the initiative as a form of pacifying justice.
