Inter Milan secured its first victory in the current UEFA Champions League group stage by defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at San Siro. The crucial match, held on a Wednesday during the third round of the tournament, saw the Italian side overcome adversity after playing a significant portion of the game with a numerical disadvantage.

The first half was characterized by strong performances from both goalkeepers, as the two possession-oriented teams engaged in a back-and-forth battle. While Inter held a slight territorial advantage on its home turf, Shakhtar's players also pushed forward to create scoring opportunities.

The dynamic of the match shifted in the second half when Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni received his second yellow card and was sent off, leaving the hosts with ten men. Capitalizing on the extra player, the Ukrainian side increased its attacking pressure and dominated possession, forcing Inter deep into its own half.

Despite being pinned back, the Nerazzurri executed a decisive counterattack that broke the deadlock. Henrikh Mkhitaryan received the ball in space and threaded a pass to Brazilian player Carlos Augusto, who finished past goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk to open the scoring.

Reflecting on the breakthrough, the team capitalized on the sudden opportunity after a period of intense pressure. Shakhtar pressed desperately for an equalizer in the closing minutes, but Inter held firm to preserve the clean sheet and secure the three points.

With this result, Inter Milan moves into the playoff qualification zone, breathing new life into its European campaign after an inconsistent start. Shakhtar Donetsk also remains in contention for the knockout rounds despite missing out on a direct qualification spot.

Both teams will return to continental action on November 3 for the fourth round of group fixtures. Shakhtar is scheduled to host Sporting Lisbon, while Inter Milan will travel to face Feyenoord away from home.
