Carlos Augusto Lifts Inter Milan to First Champions League Win

Inter Milan finally secured their first victory of the UEFA Champions League season by defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at San Siro. Carlos Augusto scored the decisive goal in the 77th minute, lifting the Italian side after a difficult start to their European campaign.

The crucial breakthrough arrived late in the second half when substitute Henrikh Mkhitaryan delivered a lofted pass from midfield. Carlos Augusto chested the ball down and poked it past the on-rushing Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk to break the deadlock.

The victory was particularly hard-fought as Inter had been reduced to 10 men nine minutes prior to the goal. Defender Alessandro Bastoni was dismissed after receiving two yellow cards in the space of three minutes, adding immense pressure to a squad that had lost its opening two matches of the tournament.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video Italia after the match, match-winner Carlos Augusto dedicated the triumph to his teammate. "We dedicate the win to Bastoni," he said, noting that playing down a man was difficult but showed how much the squad wanted the victory.

Inter had struggled heavily in Europe prior to this match, having lost seven of their previous eight games in the competition, including losses earlier in the season to Real Madrid and Club Brugge. The Italian champions entered the fixture under severe pressure to avoid another setback.

Despite the adversity and being forced to adapt after starting the game as part of a three-man defense before moving to left wing-back, Carlos Augusto praised his team's resilience. "We really needed this victory, and with the spirit we showed today, we can go forward," he added.

With this result, Inter Milan finally gets points on the board in the league phase of the Champions League. The Italian side will look to build on this momentum when they travel to face Feyenoord on November 3.
