India Moves Up in WTC Standings After West Indies Defeats Bangladesh
Bangladesh dropped to fifth place in the ICC World Test Championship standings following an eight-wicket loss to the West Indies in Mirpur.
India has climbed to fourth place in the ICC World Test Championship standings without stepping onto the field, following Bangladesh's eight-wicket defeat against the West Indies in the first Test match in Mirpur. The outcome of the match provided the Indian team with a crucial buffer in the ongoing race for a top-two finish in the championship cycle.
During the final day of the contest in Mirpur, the West Indies bowled out Bangladesh for 142 runs in their second innings. This left the visitors with a modest target of 170 runs, which they successfully chased down with eight wickets in hand, securing a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
West Indies captain Roston Chase delivered a standout bowling performance, claiming five wickets for 36 runs in the second innings. Jomel Warrican also contributed significantly to the bowling attack, taking four wickets for 63 runs after previously securing a five-wicket haul in Bangladesh's first innings. Warrican was ultimately named player of the match for his efforts.
Bangladesh had resumed the fourth day of the match holding a slender lead, but their batting lineup collapsed early. Wicketkeeper-batter Jaker Ali fell quickly, while Nayeem Hasan offered resistance by scoring a resilient 52 runs off 91 balls, which included his maiden Test half-century. However, the lower order failed to build a substantial total, leaving the West Indies with a manageable target.
West Indies openers Brandon King and John Campbell started the run chase with confidence. King played a pivotal role, striking a career-best 81 not out from 115 deliveries, featuring 10 fours and a single six. Despite brief interruptions caused by rain, bad light, and lightning, King steered his team across the finish line in 35.1 overs.
Reflecting on the victory, West Indies captain Chase stated that the squad remained determined to fight back after losing the first-innings lead. Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged his team's shortcomings, admitting that the side failed to execute their game plan across all departments, particularly in the field.
Following this result, India sits in fourth place with 51.52 percentage points from 11 matches, consisting of five wins, two draws, and four losses. Bangladesh dropped to fifth place with 47.62 percentage points from seven matches, holding three wins, one draw, and three losses. The West Indies remain in eighth position despite securing the victory.
The second and final Test of the series between Bangladesh and the West Indies is scheduled to begin in Sylhet. Another defeat for Bangladesh could push them further down the standings while solidifying India's position in the top four as the championship progresses.
