India Extends Agniveer Military Service by Two Years
The Union Cabinet approved an additional two-year tenure for 75 percent of military recruits under the Agnipath scheme, bringing their total service time to six years.
The Union Cabinet approved a two-year service extension for Agniveers who are not initially absorbed into the regular military cadre after completing their first four years, Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani announced on Wednesday. Under the updated framework, approximately 75 percent of personnel from each intake will benefit from the extension, stretching their total time in uniform to six years.
First introduced in June 2022, the Agnipath recruitment scheme initially brought young soldiers into the Army, Navy, and Air Force on transient four-year contracts. While the top 25 percent of performers could previously transition into the permanent cadre, the remainder were scheduled to exit with a one-time financial package and skill certifications. The new adjustment directly affects the inaugural cohort, whose members were slated to conclude their terms in late 2026, including Navy and Air Force personnel finishing in November and December.
General Subramani stated that the proposal originated from the armed forces following extensive internal evaluations, continuous monitoring, and positive feedback regarding the first batches. He emphasized that the initial four-year model remains the baseline and is not being discontinued, describing the policy as adaptable rather than rigid. "When the Agnipath scheme was first introduced, we emphasised that it was not set in stone. We stated that we would evaluate the performance of the Agniveers and conduct continuous reviews," Subramani said.
Following the completion of the extended two-year period, willing personnel will receive another opportunity to be evaluated for permanent enrollment as regular soldiers, contingent on merit and objective criteria. Defense experts have praised the decision. Retired Brigadier Hemant Mahajan noted that the move is mutually beneficial, explaining that a four-year stint is brief for mastering advanced technical and artillery skills, and that the extra time allows recruits to solidify their training.
Dhruv Katoch, another noted defense expert, welcomed the modification by stating that it felt like an early celebration for the recruits. The policy revision also follows political developments after the 2024 Lok Sabha election, where key National Democratic Alliance allies pushed for a review of the recruitment framework due to youth discontent and employment concerns in regions with high military participation rates.
Alongside the duration adjustments, officials outlined ongoing educational advancements that allow personnel to progress from Class 10 to Class 12 and eventually obtain a graduate degree. Pay structures, service conditions, and the Seva Nidhi financial package will continue under updated guidelines, ensuring structured career paths for participants across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
