Swiss Defense Minister Martin Pfister announced on Friday that the Swiss Armed Forces will receive the first components of a new air defense system from the United States by the middle of next year. Speaking to media outlets in Bern, Pfister confirmed that any threat of canceling the procurement is no longer a topic of discussion.

The positive updates were shared with Pfister on Thursday during a personal briefing by Callista Gingrich, the United States Ambassador to Switzerland. Pfister expressed pleasant surprise at the news, noting that the development provides a clear perspective for strengthening the nation's ground-based air defense capabilities.

In addition to the scheduled arrival of initial components by mid-2027, the Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport received approval from the US government allowing Switzerland to purchase the Patriot systems directly from the manufacturing company. Previously, communication and procurement processes had to be conducted through the US government.

Pfister noted that a formal decision from the US Congress regarding this direct procurement method is still pending. Despite this outstanding step, the assurance of upcoming deliveries marks a significant milestone for Swiss defense planning.

The acquisition had faced various discussions in the past, but the latest developments secure a vital upgrade for the military's defensive infrastructure. Swiss officials welcomed the accelerated timeline as a crucial step toward modernizing national security measures.
