India achieved its highest successful T20 international run chase on Thursday, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the first match of the five-game series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Led by an explosive performance from Sanju Samson and an early record-breaking contribution from Abhishek Sharma, the visitors successfully overhauled a target of 226 with two balls to spare.

Sent in to bat first, New Zealand posted a formidable total of 225-4 in their 20 overs. Openers Finn Allen and Tim Seifert initiated a brisk attack, while Daryl Mitchell and Bevon Jacobs maintained the momentum through the middle overs. Glenn Phillips anchored the innings with an unbeaten 82 runs from 40 balls, matching New Zealand's highest-ever score against India and setting a challenging target for the tourists.

India's reply began with immense firepower as Samson and Sharma put together an opening partnership of 93 runs in just 5.5 overs. Samson delivered a whirlwind innings of 67 runs from 33 deliveries, reaching his half-century in 23 balls and launching four massive sixes into the crowd. His performance marked his eighth score of fifty or more in 26 T20 innings this year.

During the opening over of the chase, Abhishek Sharma also captured a major milestone by breaking the world record for the most first-ball sixes in T20I history. Sharma launched a delivery from Matt Henry over the boundary to surpass Shafiqullah Shinwari's previous record. Sharma ultimately contributed 29 runs from 12 balls before falling to Michael Bracewell.

New Zealand fought back into the contest as spin was introduced, slowing the scoring rate and removing both openers, followed by the dismissal of Samson in the ninth over. India slipped to 122-4, placing sudden pressure on the middle order. However, captain Shreyas Iyer contributed 42 runs and Axar Patel added 24 to stabilize the innings with a 45-partnership for the fifth wicket.

As the required run rate mounted, Naman Dhir delivered a crucial unbeaten knock of 42 runs from just 15 deliveries at a strike rate of 280. Dhir guided the team through the final overs and sealed the victory in the final over bowled by Matt Henry, hitting a boundary and a subsequent six to secure the 230-6 total.

Despite arriving in New Zealand only on Tuesday and completing minimal training, the Indian squad displayed no evident signs of jet lag. Samson noted after the match that contributing to a collective team effort brought a rewarding outcome. With the four-wicket victory, India takes a 1-0 lead heading into the second match of the series.
