During the second T20 international match against New Zealand at Hagley Oval, Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh carved his name into the cricket record books. The left-arm seamer delivered a stellar performance to claim two wickets for 33 runs, cementing a thrilling win for the visiting side and reaching a significant individual milestone.

With his latest scalps, Arshdeep brought his total to 38 wickets in international T20 fixtures for the calendar year of 2026. This achievement allowed him to surpass the previous Indian record held by senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who had collected 37 wickets during the 2022 season.

Arshdeep accomplished this feat in just 26 innings, outpacing Kumar who required 31 innings to establish his record four years prior. The milestone also places the young Indian bowler in an elite tier among full-member cricketing nations for a single calendar year in the shortest international format, standing just behind Ireland's Josh Little, who secured 39 wickets in 2022, and tying with Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga.

In the match itself, Arshdeep played an instrumental role in restricting New Zealand to a competitive total of 180 runs for five wickets in their allotted 20 overs. He struck early in the contest by dismissing opener Tim Seifert before returning later in the innings to remove Glenn Phillips, whose aggressive knock had threatened to put the hosts in a dominant position.

New Zealand had suffered a rocky start, collapsing to 41 runs for three wickets after just over five overs due to disciplined early bowling from Arshdeep, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Prince Yadav. However, a resilient 116-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Phillips and Bevon Jacobs completely shifted the momentum.

Phillips contributed a brisk 70 runs off 43 deliveries, while Jacobs anchored the other end with 58 runs from 46 balls. Arshdeep's crucial breakthrough in dismissing Phillips ultimately broke the dangerous partnership and prevented the hosts from posting an even more formidable target.

Following the match, the team's batting heroics were highlighted as Tilak Varma credited the coaching staff for invaluable guidance. Varma noted that confidence-boosting advice from Gautam Gambhir and Sitanshu Kotak paved the way for his unbeaten knock of 51 runs, which successfully steered India to victory in the closely contested encounter.
