India and Pakistan Set for SAFF Championship Opener in Dhaka

Defending champions India face significant roster limitations as they prepare to take on Pakistan in a high-stakes regional football clash.

India and Pakistan are scheduled to face off in their opening Group B match of the 2026 SAFF Championship on Thursday, November 5, at the National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The match marks a significant moment for the defending champions, who are seeking a record-extending 10th title in the regional tournament. Despite the historical rivalry between the two nations, India head coach Naushad Moosa has emphasized a spirit of sportsmanship, confirming that his players will greet their opponents with handshakes and are open to friendly gestures before the game begins.

The buildup to the match has been complicated by logistical and scheduling challenges. Because the tournament falls outside the official FIFA international window, many clubs have been unable to release their players. Consequently, India enters the fixture with a depleted squad of only 17 available players, including just two goalkeepers. Several senior internationals are currently preparing for separate friendly matches against New Zealand, leaving Moosa to rely on a younger, reserve-heavy roster for the SAFF campaign.

Coach Moosa, a former India international who won the SAFF title as a player in 1997, acknowledged the difficulties his team has faced since arriving in Dhaka. The squad experienced a four-hour delay upon checking into their hotel, a situation Moosa described as an attempt to irritate the team. Despite these hurdles, he remains focused on the performance of his players. "We are ready for all challenges that are thrown at us," Moosa stated. "I am not really worried about defending the title. What I am concerned about is playing good football."

Pakistan faces its own set of selection issues, as many of their foreign-based players are unavailable due to club commitments during the non-FIFA window. Furthermore, the team arrived in Dhaka facing equipment delays, with their luggage reportedly stuck at the airport in Qatar, preventing them from holding a training session in the host city. Despite these setbacks, Pakistan enters the tournament with momentum, having secured three consecutive victories in recent matches without conceding a goal.

The historical head-to-head record heavily favors India, which has won 16 of the 30 previous encounters, compared to four wins for Pakistan and nine draws. However, the current form of both teams presents a contrasting narrative. While India has struggled in recent outings, including a heavy 6-1 defeat to Uruguay, Pakistan’s recent defensive organization has been a point of strength. The last time the two sides met in the SAFF Championship in 2023, India secured a decisive 4-0 victory.

The match is expected to carry significant intensity, reflecting the long-standing sporting rivalry between the two nations. While political tensions have occasionally impacted interactions in other sports, such as cricket, the football squads appear committed to maintaining professional conduct on the pitch. As the tournament progresses, the top two teams from Group B will advance to the semifinals, with India set to play their second group fixture against the Maldives on November 11.
