Giro d'Italia 2027 Unveils Brutal Route Featuring Monte Zoncolan and Gavia
Organizers revealed the official 110th edition course in Rome, highlighting legendary mountain passes and unique motorsport circuit finishes.
The official route for the 110th edition of the Giro d'Italia was officially unveiled in Rome, mapping out a demanding 3,418.9-kilometer journey across Italy and neighboring Slovenia. Scheduled to run from May 8 to May 30, 2027, the prestigious cycling race will feature seven summit finishes, two individual time trials, and a staggering total elevation gain of 50,250 meters, setting up what cycling experts describe as a true paradise for climbing specialists.
The Grand Tour will commence with an explosive opening stage starting and finishing in Trieste, which dips briefly across the Slovenian border before a second stage held entirely within Slovenia from Ljubljana to Koper. After returning to Italian soil, the peloton will head down the Adriatic coast toward Naples before winding back northward through the Italian peninsula.
The competition will incorporate several unique nods to motorsport culture throughout its three weeks. Stage 4 will finish at the Autodromo Marco Simoncelli in Misano, Stage 11 will conclude at the Mugello circuit, and the flat 37.3-kilometer second time trial on Stage 15 will start from the historic Autodromo Nazionale di Monza Formula 1 track. These motorsport venues add a distinctive flair to the 2027 itinerary.
General classification contenders will face rigorous tests starting early in the race, notably with an uphill time trial on Stage 7 from Sulmona to Campo di Giove. However, the true deciders of the race wait in the high mountains during a punishing final week. Stage 16 is slated as the queen stage, tackling an extraordinary 5,700 meters of elevation by sandwiching the legendary Passo Gavia—serving as the Cima Coppi at 2,618 meters—between a grueling double ascent of the Mortirolo pass. The Gavia makes its long-awaited return to the Giro for the first time since 2014.
The penultimate 20th stage will mark the race's dramatic climax on the brutal slopes of the Monte Zoncolan. Returning to the Giro for the first time since 2021, the climb averages an intense 11.9 percent gradient over 10.1 kilometers with maximum pitches reaching 24 percent, providing the final major battleground for the pink jersey before the ceremonial conclusion in Rome.
Concurrently, organizers also detailed the route for the 38th edition of the Giro d'Italia Women, scheduled from May 29 to June 6, 2027. Beginning in Viareggio, the nine-stage women's race will cover 1,132 kilometers with 17,450 meters of positive elevation, culminating in a demanding Alpine test beneath the Mont Blanc massif that features an uphill time trial and a final Queen stage over the Colle San Carlo.
