Tributes have poured in from across the professional cycling community for Elena Cecchini after the 34-year-old Italian star officially brought her 16-year career to a close at the Eneco Tour. Current and former teammates, along with team management, celebrated her extensive achievements and her influential role both on and off the bike across multiple eras and disciplines.

Riders and staff from her team, including Demi Vollering, Lotte Kopecky, and Urška Žigart, shared heartfelt messages in an online tribute. Žigart praised her legacy by stating, "You were one of the stars of women's cycling, you were one of my big, big idols. Thank you for everything you've given to the sport, you've been one of the guiding forces." Vollering echoed similar sentiments, expressing eternal gratitude for the lessons and time spent alongside her.

Throughout her professional journey, Cecchini mirrored her husband Elia Viviani by successfully competing across various specialties on both the track and the road. Her consistency and versatility were standout traits, earning her three consecutive Italian national road race titles between 2014 and 2016, followed by national time trial victories in 2018.

One of her most notable international stage race successes came at the former Thuringen Rundfahrt der Frauen in Germany. In 2016, she secured the overall title by laying the groundwork with a second-place finish on the queen stage leading to Schleiz, later adding individual stage wins in 2018 and 2019.

Cecchini also built an impressive resume on the track, starting with a silver medal in the points race at the 2009 Junior World Championships, followed by a gold medal at the Junior European Track Championships a year later. At the senior level, she earned bronze medals in both the points race and scratch events in 2014, and later claimed a silver medal in the 2019 European road race.

In her later years, following her move to SD Worx-Protime in 2021, Cecchini transitioned into a vital team captain and support role. Her extensive experience—which included participating in 18 Grand Tours, 12 editions of the Giro d'Italia Women, 12 starts at the Tour of Flanders, and five at Paris-Roubaix—made her an invaluable tactical and technical asset behind the scenes.

Team manager Danny Stam highlighted her immense contributions to the squad, noting her reliability and her status as a pioneer who worked tirelessly to lower barriers to entry in cycling. Reflecting on her retirement decision in a prior press release, Cecchini acknowledged the privileged life of a top athlete while expressing peace with her choice to step away.
