German Climber Rescued in Austrian Alps After Companions Leave Him Behind
A 20-year-old mountaineer was rescued after enduring freezing temperatures and exhaustion during a 14-hour ordeal in the Hochkönig massif.
A 20-year-old German climber was rescued from the Königsjodler via ferrata in the Hochkönig massif in Austria after being left behind by his companions during a severe snowstorm. The grueling rescue operation lasted 14 hours, leaving the young man exhausted and severely hypothermic.
The dangerous situation began when the climber, hailing from the Nuremberg area, set out with two other German mountaineers on a Saturday afternoon. According to mountain rescue services, the group ignored an explicit warning from another hiker and proceeded despite a heavily unfavorable weather forecast.
As the trio ascended the demanding route toward the summit, harsh winter conditions set in. At an altitude of 8,600 feet, the 20-year-old ran out of strength amidst heavy snowfall and blistering winds. Rather than assisting or staying with him, his two companions pressed onward toward the peak and eventually reached the closed Matrashaus shelter.
Left entirely on his own, the stranded climber managed to place an emergency call around 7:00 p.m. Mountain rescue teams in Mühlbach immediately mobilized, though severe weather prevented any helicopter deployment. Eleven rescuers were forced to climb the treacherous, icy slope on foot, battling poor visibility and dangerous conditions.
Rescue coordinators maintained constant telephone contact with the freezing climber throughout the night. District rescue manager Gerhard Kremser noted that dispatchers instructed the man to perform exercises, stating, "He should do squats," in order to keep his blood circulating and stave off deadly hypothermia.
Around midnight, the team of rescuers finally reached the hypothermic climber. Because the trail was completely obscured by fresh snow and presented extreme avalanche and falling hazards, the descent was exceptionally perilous. The team roped the young man in, and after an arduous eight-hour trek down through deep snowdrifts, they safely reached the Erichhütte shelter early Sunday morning.
Mountain rescue officials sharply criticized the behavior of the climber's companions, emphasizing that another night exposed to the brutal alpine elements would likely have proved fatal. "A further night up there, amid snowfall and under these conditions, he presumably would not have survived," Kremser stated.
Police authorities and the alpine police have launched an investigation to determine whether the actions of the two companions, who safely descended the normal hiking trail the following morning, carry any criminal relevance. Officials reiterated that the harrowing incident underscores the severe dangers of poor planning and disregarding safety warnings in the mountains.
