French Travel Influencer Emma Marie Laurent Dies in Nicaragua River Accident

French travel influencer Emma Marie Laurent died at the age of 24 following a tragic river accident in Nicaragua on October 9, 2026. The incident occurred near El Manzano in the Chinandega region when a pickup truck attempting to cross the Nahualpa River was overwhelmed by a sudden and violent swell caused by heavy rainfall.

Laurent was traveling alongside her close friend and fellow content creator Marine Despouys, as part of a collaboration with a local surf hotel where they had been staying. The group of six occupants was returning from a salsa class around midnight during an intense tropical downpour when they reached a flooded crossing.

According to Despouys's detailed account shared on social media, the driver, who managed the hotel, stepped out of the vehicle to check the water level before deciding to proceed. However, a sudden surge of water struck the right side of the pickup instantly, rising to the windows and trapping the four female passengers in the back seat as the doors and windows failed to open.

As the vehicle was submerged and swept away, Laurent urged her fellow passengers to remain calm and conserve oxygen. While the male driver and a passenger managed to escape through front windows before the vehicle sank, Laurent and two other women remained trapped inside. The other victims were identified as Noa Lina Luscher, a 20-year-old from Switzerland, and Karen Nahomi Lopez Montano, a 19-year-old from Nicaragua.

Despouys managed to escape the sinking vehicle through the front left window, eventually being swept into a tree trunk where she called for help. Local residents rushed to the scene and located the overturned truck about 300 meters downstream. Despouys recounted trying desperately to resuscitate Laurent for over thirty minutes after the vehicle was pulled from the water, but her efforts were unsuccessful.

Laurent, who had accumulated tens of thousands of followers on Instagram and TikTok, was widely known for documenting her nomadic lifestyle, surfing, and vanlife adventures alongside Despouys, with whom she had traveled the world for two years. Her final social media post featured footage from Portugal accompanied by a reflection on appreciating the beauty of the world.

The tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the online travel community, with fans and peers sharing heartfelt tributes mourning her vibrant spirit and untimely death.
