French Car Market Surges in October 2026 as Electric Vehicles Reach 41 Percent

Electric models drive growth across France as new registrations climb by seven percent, led by strong performances from Renault and the new Twingo.

In October 2026, the French new car market recorded 149,340 passenger vehicle registrations, marking a 7 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year despite having one fewer business day. This represents the sixth consecutive monthly rise, lifting the total number of new car sales for the first ten months of the year to approximately 1.38 million units, up 4.4 percent from 2025.

The primary driver behind this growth is the rapid expansion of fully electric vehicles, which accounted for 41 percent of all new car sales in October with 61,958 registrations. Among retail customers, the adoption rate reached an even higher milestone, with 45 percent of buyers choosing a 100 percent electric model. Meanwhile, hybrid vehicles captured 44 percent of the market, while traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles experienced sharp declines.

The surge in electric vehicle sales reshaped the domestic brand rankings. The new Renault Twingo claimed the top spot among electric vehicles with 4,747 units, narrowly outpacing the Renault 5, which registered 4,666 units. Other notable electric models in high demand included the Peugeot e-208, the Renault Scénic, and the Citroën ë-C3, collectively helping domestic manufacturers maintain a strong presence in the rapidly shifting automotive landscape.

Household buyers played a vital role in the October figures, purchasing 84,757 new cars—an 18 percent increase from the previous year—which gave them 57 percent of the total market share. The return of retail customers to dealerships was supported by the recent Paris Motor Show and various financial incentives aimed at encouraging the transition away from internal combustion engines. In contrast, corporate fleets and short-term rental channels experienced declines during the month.

Chinese automakers also continued their notable market penetration in France. BYD entered the monthly top ten for the first time by securing the seventh position with more than 5,400 registrations, capturing a 3.6 percent market share. Other brands such as Jaecoo and MG also posted significant gains, reflecting a broader diversification of choices available to French consumers.

As the automotive market transitions rapidly toward electrification, industry analysts and buyers alike are navigating complex regulatory changes regarding environmental scores and financial incentives. With new rules taking effect on November 24, 2026, governing the calculation of environmental scores for vehicle subsidies, experts advise motorists to carefully verify exact vehicle configurations, delivery timelines, and financing details before signing purchase contracts.
