France 2 Premieres New Drama Series Inspired by Mourmelon Disappearances
The four-part television drama "Les Disparus des Argonnes" explores a dark chapter of French judicial history involving young soldiers who vanished in the 1980s.
France 2 has debuted its new four-part mini-series "Les Disparus des Argonnes," bringing to television a dark and painful chapter of French judicial history. The drama, which premiered on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, centers on the real-life disappearance of young men performing their mandatory military service near the Mourmelon military camp in the Marne region during the 1980s.
Created by Julie Peyr and Safy Nebbou, the series adapts a novel by Peyr and draws heavily from the actual historical case known as the Mourmelon disappearances. Between 1980 and 1987, at least eight young men vanished after hitchhiking near the military facility. In the early stages, military authorities often dismissed the cases as desertions, leaving families to wage lonely battles for answers as investigations stalled.
The plot follows Jocelyne Veyrades, portrayed by Alix Poisson, a determined mother searching for her missing son, Gilles, who disappeared on his way home for leave. Alongside Poisson, the cast features Félix Moati as a gendarmerie captain, Mehdi Nebbou as a television presenter, Aïssa Maïga as a judge, and Anne Charrier as the sister of the main suspect.
The historical investigation took a major turn on August 9, 1988, with the arrest of Pierre Chanal, a warrant officer previously stationed at the 4th Dragoon Regiment in Mourmelon. Chanal was later convicted in 1990 for crimes against a young Hungarian national and was subsequently sent to the assize court in 2001 in connection with the Mourmelon dossier before dying by suicide in 2003 just prior to a new trial.
The mini-series goes beyond a standard police procedural to examine the broader social context of the tragedy, highlighting institutional failings, the grief of victims' families, and the silence surrounding the military at the time. Lead actress Alix Poisson noted that portraying the story carried a heavy responsibility toward those affected by the real-life events. "We always tell ourselves that the people concerned may still be alive, that this tragedy turned their lives upside down, so naturally we want to carry their message higher, louder, and as with as much dignity as possible," Poisson stated.
Before its broadcast on television, the production found early success on digital platforms. Released on France.tv on October 30, the series accumulated 1.4 million video views within its first five days. The project also received critical recognition earlier, winning the award for best drama and suspense series at the La Rochelle Fiction Festival in 2026.
