Florida State Fires Football Coach Mike Norvell Amid Struggles
The university dismissed its head coach following a home loss to Clemson, leaving behind a buyout package approaching $50 million.
Florida State University dismissed head coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, roughly 12 hours after a home loss to Clemson, despite facing a buyout of approximately $50 million that ranks among the largest in college football history. School president Richard McCullough announced the leadership change after the Seminoles fell to 10-22 since the start of the 2024 season. Assistant coach Rick Stockstill was named interim head coach while the university searches for a successor.
The decision comes on the heels of a 36-24 defeat against Clemson, a game in which Florida State entered as a 5-point favorite. The Seminoles have struggled significantly this fall, holding a 3-5 overall record and a 1-5 mark against Power Four programs. The program has not defeated any of its main three rivals—Miami, Florida, or Clemson—since the 2023 season, and is currently fighting to achieve bowl eligibility.
Norvell compiled a 41-39 record during his six-plus seasons in Tallahassee. While his tenure featured an undefeated 13-0 run in 2023 that ended with the team being left out of the College Football Playoff, recent seasons have been marked by steep declines and offensive struggles with quarterbacks DJ Uiagalelei, Tommy Castellanos, and Ashton Daniels.
“We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program,” school president Richard McCullough said in a statement. “We thank Mike Norvell for his commitment and service to Florida State and wish him and his family the very best. We understand the deep passion of Seminole fans and share their high expectations for this program.”
Norvell’s contract, which ran through the 2031 season, included a buyout of roughly $47 million, representing 85 percent of his remaining salary. Additional buyouts for his assistant coaches are expected to push the total cost past $50 million. The financial obligation features offset language that could reduce the amount if Norvell secures another coaching position.
The dismissal follows a turbulent period for the athletic department, which included the firing of athletic director Michael Alford in mid-September. McCullough acknowledged fan frustration in a public statement last week, noting that leadership was committed to changing results. Florida State is now the fourth Power Four school actively seeking a new head football coach as the season progresses.
