Eintracht Frankfurt Knocks Depleted Hamburger SV Out of German Cup

A 3-1 defeat at Volksparkstadion compounds Hamburg's worsening injury crisis ahead of Sunday's league rematch.

Eintracht Frankfurt eliminated an injury-ravaged Hamburger SV from the second round of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday, securing a 3-1 victory in front of 57,000 spectators at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg. Captain Robin Koch, Jonathan Burkardt, and substitute Younes Ebnoutalib each scored for the visiting side, while striker Terem Moffi managed only a late consolation goal for the hosts. The outcome sends Frankfurt into the round of 16 and deepens the personnel challenges facing Hamburg coach Merlin Polzin.

Despite entering the fixture without multiple regular starters, Hamburg opened the match with intensity and dictated play during the first half. Defender Shaqif Nandja generated the game's first significant opportunity with a sixth-minute header, followed by a dangerous attempt in the 24th minute from Zakaria El Ouahdi that forced a save from Frankfurt goalkeeper Noah Atubolu. Minutes later, Albert Grönbaek narrowly missed the target, keeping the pressure firmly on the visiting defense.

At the other end, Hamburg defensive anchor Sebastiaan Bornauw produced a crucial block against Burkardt in the 30th minute to keep the match scoreless. Bornauw nearly broke the deadlock himself in the 42nd minute with a header that sailed just wide. However, the defender's evening ended in heartbreak moments before the interval, as an accidental collision with Atubolu left him injured and unable to return for the second half.

Frankfurt seized control following the break, taking advantage of the reshuffled Hamburg back line. Koch capitalized from close range in the 56th minute to open the scoring. Hamburg attempted to respond quickly, with Miro Muheim testing Atubolu from distance and Moffi failing to convert a header from inside the box. Frankfurt punished those missed opportunities in the 71st minute when Burkardt scored with his final touch before being substituted. Ebnoutalib, Frankfurt's top Bundesliga scorer who began the game on the bench, added a third just four minutes after entering the pitch, before Moffi cut the deficit in the 79th minute.

The victory provided a welcome boost for Frankfurt following consecutive shutout road losses against RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund. "Towards the end we did well. Robin sensationally held everything together at the back," Frankfurt midfielder Mario Götze told reporters after the final whistle. "We are on a good path. It is hard work, including a game like today. We are making good progress, and you could see that again today."

For Hamburg, the result highlighted a severe injury crisis that forced Polzin to deploy a makeshift lineup. The team was already missing six key contributors before kickoff: team captain Nicolai Remberg due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament, playmaker Fabio Vieira with a torn muscle fiber, midfielder Bilal Nadir with a tendon rupture, defender Nicolas Capaldo with a strain, center-back Jordan Torunarigha with muscular issues, and forward Yussuf Poulsen with a hip problem. Mario Vuskovic was also unavailable, creating a stark contrast to earlier optimistic reports regarding Vieira's readiness following cramps.

Hamburg, currently sitting in 11th place in the Bundesliga, will not have much time to lament the cup exit. Both clubs will meet again this Sunday at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt for a league rematch. Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa urged the squad to shift its focus immediately, emphasizing that the team created sufficient scoring opportunities during the cup defeat and must look ahead to the next challenge.
