Detroit Red Wings Defeat Florida Panthers 5-3 in Sunrise
Justin Faulk and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård scored early in the third period to help lift the Red Wings past their Atlantic Division rivals.
The Detroit Red Wings secured a 5-3 victory against the Florida Panthers on Monday night at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida. Driven by a strong third-period push, the visiting Red Wings handed the Panthers their first loss in four games, snapping Florida's three-game winning streak.
Goaltender Daniil Tarasov earned a victory against his former team, stopping 23 shots for Detroit. On the opposing side, Panthers netminder Jacob Markstrom made 24 saves in his first appearance since October 17. The game marked the first stop of a brief Sunshine State road trip for the Red Wings.
Detroit opened the scoring in the first period when Carter Mazur netted his first career National Hockey League goal, taking advantage of a screen by Keegan Kolesar to beat Markstrom from the left circle. Florida responded later in the period when Sam Reinhart scored his eighth goal of the season off a quick pass from Carter Verhaeghe following a turnover behind the net.
The Red Wings reclaimed the lead early in the second period when Viktor Arvidsson set up Alex DeBrincat for a wrist shot, marking DeBrincat's seventh goal of the season. However, the Panthers tied the game again before the period ended when Aaron Ekblad scored a shorthanded goal from behind the goal line that deflected off Tarasov's skate.
The game broke open in the third period when Detroit scored twice in a span of 45 seconds. Justin Faulk capitalized on a power play at 2:06 with a slapshot through traffic to make it 3-2. Shortly after, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård extended the lead by lifting a shot over Markstrom's glove from deep in the slot following a pass from Lucas Raymond.
Florida attempted a late comeback when Sam Bennett scored with 3:21 remaining on the clock, assisted by Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk during a 6-on-5 extra-attacker opportunity. However, Emmitt Finnie sealed the win for Detroit by scoring into an empty net with just 2.7 seconds left.
With the win, the Red Wings improved their recent form while navigating a tightly contested Atlantic Division. The Panthers played without several key skaters, including Aleksander Barkov Jr., Jonah Gadjovich, and Brad Marchand, due to injuries.
The Red Wings conclude their two-game road trip in Florida with a matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night, while the Panthers return home to host the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night.
