Avalanche Defeat Flames 5-2 Behind Lehkonen and Makar
Artturi Lehkonen scored twice and Cale Makar tallied four assists to lead Colorado past Calgary on Saturday night.
Artturi Lehkonen scored a pair of goals, Nathan MacKinnon contributed a goal and an assist, and the Colorado Avalanche secured a 5-2 victory against the Calgary Flames on Saturday night in Denver. The matchup marked the second consecutive night of play for the Flames, who turned to their third-string goaltender after recent roster adjustments.
Martin Necas and Brock Nelson also found the back of the net for Colorado, while defenseman Cale Makar powered the offense with four assists. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood anchored the defense by stopping 25 shots to help the Avalanche claim their second straight win against an opponent playing on consecutive nights.
The Flames were forced to rely on goaltender Arsenii Sergeev for his second career NHL regular-season start and his first of the season. Sergeev was recently recalled from the American Hockey League after Devin Cooley was placed on the injured list with a lower-body injury. Despite facing relentless pressure from the high-scoring Avalanche offense, Sergeev turned away 29 shots.
Colorado built a commanding lead during a frantic three-goal burst in the opening ten minutes of the second period. Nelson capped that sequence to give the Avalanche a 4-0 advantage, though he briefly exited the game after taking a shot from Makar off the side of his helmet. Nelson was able to skate to the locker room and eventually returned to action in the third period.
Calgary attempted to mount a comeback as Joel Farabee scored just under two minutes after Nelson's goal, cutting into the deficit. Martin Pospisil added another tally for the Flames early in the third period to make it a 4-2 game, but any hopes of a complete rally were dashed shortly after.
Lehkonen restored a more comfortable cushion for Colorado at the 4:09 mark of the final period by deflecting a point shot from Makar past Sergeev. The sequence finalized the score at 5-2 and sealed the outcome in favor of the home team.
Disciplined play characterized the evening for Colorado, which did not receive a single penalty during the contest. Conversely, Calgary was whistled three times, including a double minor late in the third period.
Following this matchup, the Calgary Flames continue their road trip with a game against the San Jose Sharks on Monday night. Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche prepare to travel for a matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks on the same evening.
