Cyclone Arnab Threatens India's Eastern Coast with Severe Winds and Heavy Rain
Authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are evacuating tens of thousands of residents and canceling transportation services as the powerful storm approaches landfall.
India is actively evacuating tens of thousands of residents from its eastern coast as Cyclone Arnab rapidly intensifies into a very severe cyclonic storm. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the storm formed over the Bay of Bengal and is tracking toward the coast, threatening millions of people across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
According to weather forecasters, the storm is expected to make landfall by Wednesday morning near Yanam, positioned between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. Sustained winds are projected to reach between 115 and 135 kilometers per hour, with violent gusts hitting up to 150 kilometers per hour, bringing a serious risk of structural damage and severe flooding to low-lying coastal sectors.
State authorities have accelerated safety measures and established numerous relief shelters. Prakhar Jain, the managing director of Andhra Pradesh's disaster management authority, stated that nearly 50,000 individuals had already been moved out of vulnerable areas by Monday night out of an estimated 400,000 requiring relocation. "Evacuation is continuing," Jain noted.
In addition to residential relocations, emergency responders have prioritized specialized care. Officials reported that over 1,350 pregnant women have been transferred safely to hospitals, more than 30,000 fishing boats have been secured, and over 1,000 medical teams have been deployed. Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi warned that his state will also face severe weather impacts, including intense rainfall and winds reaching up to 80 kilometers per hour.
Transportation networks across the region have experienced extensive disruptions. South Central Railway canceled over 50 train services scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday to protect passengers. Major airlines, including Air India and IndiGo, warned of flight delays and cancellations at airports in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, urging travelers to verify their itineraries before heading to terminals.
Local administrations have enforced precautionary closures, shutting down schools across several districts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Officials have strictly prohibited sea fishing operations and urged the public to stay indoors. In Yanam, municipal workers deployed heavy machinery to clear drainage channels and minimize the threat of severe waterlogging.
Neighboring countries are also bracing for the far-reaching atmospheric effects of the storm. In Nepal, authorities issued advisories warning tourists to avoid high-altitude zones in the Himalayas due to potential heavy rain, snowstorms, and avalanches later in the week. Forecasters indicate that the outer bands of Cyclone Arnab could also bring heavy showers and thunderstorms to parts of northern India and Delhi-NCR.
Meteorologists emphasize that the Bay of Bengal remains one of the world's most active regions for tropical cyclonic activity. Residents along the projected path have been strongly advised to monitor official weather updates and adhere strictly to government safety instructions until the system dissipates.
