Severe Cyclone Prompts Closures in India as Unseasonal Warmth Sweeps US

Dangerous coastal winds disrupt schools abroad while near-record October temperatures dominate the American Midwest.

Stark contrasts define regional weather forecasts for tomorrow, as severe tropical conditions prompt school closures and safety measures in eastern India while unseasonably warm weather approaches record highs across parts of the United States. In India, authorities in multiple states are bracing for the impact of Cyclone Arnab as it generates torrential rainfall and damaging winds. Meanwhile, communities across the American Midwest and Great Lakes will experience sunny skies and temperatures well above normal late-October averages before incoming storm systems alter atmospheric patterns.

According to India Meteorological Department bulletins, the very severe cyclonic storm Arnab moved across the west-central Bay of Bengal at 18 kilometers per hour, pushing outer spiral bands over land. Forecasters located the storm off the Andhra Pradesh coast, southeast of Kakinada and south of Visakhapatnam. The storm was projected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, packing sustained winds of 125 to 135 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 150 kilometers per hour. Disagreements appeared regarding landfall timing: an earlier bulletin projected early morning landfall between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. on October 28, while other updates pointed to landfall extending into Wednesday morning.

The severe storm prompted extensive protective measures, forcing district administrations across several states to close schools. In Andhra Pradesh, schools in 10 districts closed, with Anakapalli mandating closures through October 29. Six Odisha districts, including Khordha, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, and Puri, ordered schools and care centers shut. In Jharkhand, where heavy rainfall is expected, officials in Ranchi and West Singhbhum closed schools on October 28 and 29. The meteorological department also placed Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, Simdega, and West Singhbhum under an orange alert through the morning of October 30, while Chhattisgarh enhanced precautions. Officials emphasized that no nationwide school holiday has been declared.

In contrast, parts of the United States are preparing for unusually warm weather tomorrow. In the western Great Lakes, an advancing warm front will clear skies by daybreak, bringing mostly sunny conditions and gusty south winds. High temperatures away from Lake Michigan are expected to reach the lower 70s, likely breaking a 1946 record high of 70 degrees. While typical late-October highs are cooler, the southerly flow will push readings well above normal.

Similar warmth will cover Ohio, where above-normal temperatures continue. In Columbus, morning readings in the 50s will climb to the mid-70s by afternoon alongside southwest breezes, well above typical low-60s averages. In Toledo, temperatures will approach the area record of 79 degrees set in 2024, reaching the middle to upper 70s. While most of the day will remain sunny and dry, isolated to scattered showers could develop late in the afternoon and early evening.

Tomorrow night will bring changes as a cold front sweeps across the western Great Lakes, triggering scattered showers and thunderstorms. While severe weather is not forecast, brief heavy downpours are possible. Behind the boundary, gusty northwest winds will bring slightly cooler air for Thursday, with sunny skies and highs in the mid-to-upper 60s.

Looking ahead to the weekend, forecasters anticipate unsettled conditions for Halloween. Thursday evening in central Ohio offers mild trick-or-treating in the 60s and 70s, but cooler air will push weekend temperatures into the 50s. The Great Lakes face possible intermittent showers on Halloween. Finally, Saturday night brings the annual time change as clocks fall back one hour, preceding rain chances scheduled to arrive as November begins.
