Canelo Alvarez Regains WBC Super-Middleweight Title Against Christian Mbilli
The Mexican boxing icon secured a dominant unanimous decision victory in Riyadh to capture the belt.
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez captured the WBC super-middleweight championship on Saturday night at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, defeating Christian Mbilli by a dominant unanimous decision. The judges scored the bout 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112 in favor of Alvarez, handing the previously undefeated champion his first professional loss and lifting Alvarez's record to 64-3-2 while Mbilli fell to 29-1-1.
The 36-year-old Mexican icon returned to the ring for his first fight in over a year following a defeat to Terence Crawford. Entering the bout against a younger, heavy-volume champion, Alvarez utilized his trademark precision and defensive intelligence to dictate the pace of the match. Early exchanges favored Mbilli as he applied relentless pressure and pushed the action, but Alvarez systematically adjusted by countering effectively and controlling the distance.
As the fight progressed into the second half, Alvarez established an irresistible rhythm, snapping Mbilli's head back with crisp uppercuts and finding continuous success with his right hook and jab. A turning point arrived in the eighth round when referee Hector Afu deducted a point from Mbilli for a punch to the back of Alvarez's head, which slowed the champion's momentum. Alvarez maintained control through the championship rounds, capping off his performance with a strong final session that wobbled Mbilli.
Following the victory, an emotional Alvarez expressed his gratitude to his training team and family, sharing a tearful embrace with trainer Eddy Reynoso. "It's something unbelievable," Alvarez said after the bout, crediting his corner's game plan of moving, boxing, and anchoring his performance with a sharp jab. Regarding his future inside the ring, Alvarez noted that he plans to rest and continue working hard before making any immediate commitments to his next opponent.
The co-main event featured Jaime Munguia successfully defending his WBA super-middleweight championship via a unanimous decision against Nikita Zon, with judges scoring it 117-111 twice and 116-112. Munguia survived a turbulent sixth round where a powerful left uppercut from Zon put him in trouble, but he rallied to secure the victory and improve his record to 47-2.
In other championship action on the main card, Rafael Espinoza retained his WBO featherweight title with a technical knockout victory over Ricardo Blandon in the third round. A straight right hand opened a severe cut over Blandon's left eye, prompting the ringside physician to halt the contest. Additionally, Reito Tsutsumi extended his knockout streak by stopping Reymundo Rojas Garcia in the second round.
