Canelo Alvarez Defeats Christian Mbilli to Regain WBC Super-Middleweight Title
The Mexican boxing icon secured a dominant unanimous decision victory in Riyadh, handing Mbilli his first professional defeat.
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez regained the WBC super-middleweight championship on Saturday night at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, delivering a dominant unanimous decision victory over Christian Mbilli. The judges scored the bout 115-112, 116-111, and 117-110 in favor of Alvarez, handing the previously undefeated champion his first professional loss.
Returning to the ring for the first time since losing his undisputed championship to Terence Crawford in September 2025, the 36-year-old Mexican star proved his championship hunger remained intact. Alvarez improved his professional record to 64-3-2, while Mbilli dropped to 29-1-1. The victory answered lingering questions about whether Alvarez's elite career had reached its twilight following his defeat to Crawford.
The opening half of the fight was closely contested, with Mbilli leveraging his youth, high punch volume, and early pressure to push Alvarez toward the ropes. However, Alvarez utilized sharp counterpunching, precise body shots, and effective defense to weather the storm. By the sixth round, Alvarez established an irresistible rhythm, snapping Mbilli's head back with crisp uppercuts and landing clean right hooks.
The momentum shifted decisively in the second half as Alvarez dictated the pace and neutralized the champion's offense. A controversial moment arrived in the eighth round when referee Hector Afu deducted a point from Mbilli for a punch to the back of Alvarez's head, further stalling the younger fighter's momentum. Alvarez controlled the later rounds with a steady jab and a strong finish, wobbling Mbilli with a heavy right hand in the final seconds.
Following the final bell, an emotional Alvarez celebrated his triumph in the ring, sharing a tearful embrace with trainer Eddy Reynoso. "Oh, it’s so difficult to explain," Alvarez said of the victory. "It’s something unbelievable." He credited Reynoso's tactical instructions and expressed immense pride in his training team.
While fans and analysts look forward to potential future matchups, Alvarez stated that he has made no immediate commitment to his next opponent. "I’m gonna rest. I’m gonna keep learning. I’m gonna keep working hard," he said.
The undercard featured several notable title defenses. In the co-main event, Jaime Munguia survived a turbulent sixth-round knockdown scare against Nikita Zon to retain his WBA super-middleweight title via unanimous decision with scores of 117-111, 117-111, and 116-112. Additionally, Rafael Espinoza defended his WBO featherweight title with a third-round technical knockout over Ricardo Blandon after a ringside physician recommended stopping the bout due to a cut over Blandon's eyelid, and prospect Reito Tsutsumi extended his knockout streak by stopping Raymundo Rojas Garcia in the second round.
