Caleb Wilson Faces Rough NBA Debut in Chicago Bulls Season Opener
The rookie forward struggled with efficiency and turnovers as the Toronto Raptors defeated the Chicago Bulls 135-92.
The Chicago Bulls suffered a heavy 135-92 defeat against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night during the opening game of the NBA season. Amid the blowout loss, rookie forward Caleb Wilson experienced a difficult official professional debut that highlighted the steep learning curve of the league.
Wilson, selected fourth overall in the recent NBA draft, finished the contest with 16 points, four rebounds, and three steals. However, his shooting efficiency suffered as he made just seven of 21 attempts from the field, including one of eight from beyond the arc. Additionally, the rookie committed nine turnovers during the match, contributing to a total of 27 team turnovers for Chicago that yielded 35 points for Toronto.
According to reports, Wilson recorded a minus-45 plus-minus rating, which marks a difficult statistical milestone for an NBA debut. Despite the struggles, head coach Tiago Splitter emphasized patience regarding the development of his young roster, noting prior to the game that the rookie needed space to learn and adjust to the speed of professional basketball.
"Caleb has a thousand things on his mind right now, right? First NBA game, how we play on offense, how we play on defense. There is a lot of things going on. Sometimes, he's just got to relax a little bit. Go out there and hoop and slowly he's going to get those things better," Splitter said ahead of the matchup.
The Raptors dominated from the start, never trailing in the contest. Kawhi Leonard, returning to Toronto after a recent offseason trade, led the charge with 23 points. Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley also contributed 23 points apiece, while RJ Barrett added 20 for the home team. Toronto's defense caused persistent problems for the Bulls, utilizing their length and physical play to disrupt Chicago's offensive flow.
Wilson expressed enthusiasm prior to his debut about facing a challenging opponent right away, viewing the matchup as a valuable test. Having established a standout college career at North Carolina prior to being drafted, the forward acknowledged the distinct differences between the collegiate level and the NBA game, particularly regarding defensive positioning and timing.
"It's really important," Wilson stated regarding interior defense prior to the game. "Last game I had two blocks. I'm kind of learning just how to do so many different things. It's just such a different game than what I was playing a couple of months ago in college."
Following the challenging opening night, the Chicago Bulls and Wilson will look to bounce back and secure their first victory of the young season when they face the Milwaukee Bucks.
