The team captain converted a retaken penalty to spark a second-half turnaround in the Champions League.

Manchester United secured a vital 3-2 victory against AS Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday, overcoming a two-goal halftime deficit in the Champions League. The win marked a significant turning point for the club, which had been struggling through a nine-game winless streak and intense media speculation regarding the future of manager Michael Carrick.

The match appeared to be slipping away from the hosts early on, as Roma established a 2-0 lead within the first 18 minutes. However, the momentum shifted in the 55th minute when United was awarded a penalty. Captain Bruno Fernandes initially saw his spot-kick saved by Roma goalkeeper Devis Vasquez. The attempt was ordered to be retaken after a VAR review confirmed that Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante had encroached into the penalty area before the ball was struck and subsequently played a role in clearing the rebound.

Fernandes capitalized on the second opportunity, striking the ball into the top corner to narrow the deficit. Reflecting on the moment, the midfielder admitted he felt fortunate for the second chance. "I was lucky honestly that Cristante went into the box too early, so it gave me an opportunity to take it again," Fernandes told Sky Sport Italia. "The second time, I decided to pick a spot and hit it as hard as I could without trying to second-guess where the goalkeeper was going."

Following the successful penalty, United intensified their pressure, eventually securing the win through two late goals from Matheus Cunha. The victory provided a much-needed boost for the squad, which currently sits 17th in the Premier League. Despite recent reports of internal friction and public criticism of team tactics, Fernandes emphasized that the players are focused on collective improvement rather than individual agendas.

Addressing speculation about the manager's job security, Fernandes stated, "We don't need to save anyone's job. The club needed that win, the players needed that win. We have been working so hard to get out of this situation all together." He further noted that recent reports of conflict between him and Carrick were exaggerated, confirming that the two had held private discussions to clear the air following a difficult loss to Como earlier in the season.

The past few weeks have been particularly challenging for the United captain, who was benched for the recent defeat against Bournemouth. The period also included a personal crisis, as his family home was burglarized while he was away for a match. Despite these setbacks and ongoing scrutiny regarding his leadership style, teammates and club figures have defended his commitment to the team, describing him as a player who feels the weight of the club's current struggles deeply.

As the team looks to build on this Champions League result, the focus remains on stabilizing their domestic performance. Fernandes expressed optimism that the squad possesses the necessary quality to overcome their current slump. "I hope this can give us the confidence to go forward and do better, because there is quality in this squad," he said. "It's not possible that it all just disappeared."
