Brighton Draw Ends Winning Streak and Chicago Woman Injured in Shooting
Brighton settles for a scoreless draw in European play while Chicago police investigate a violent shooting in the Brighton Park neighborhood.
Brighton saw their six-match winning streak come to an end after being held to a 0-0 draw by Jablonec in the Conference League in the Czech Republic. Manager Fabian Hurzeler made eight lineup changes following a dominant 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday, but the squad struggled to find its usual offensive rhythm.
Despite dominating possession throughout the match, the English side managed few clear scoring opportunities. Forward Georginio Rutter came closest in the opening half, first forcing a save before missing the target by a narrow margin just before the interval.
The visitors thought they had finally broken the deadlock shortly after the second half commenced when Malick Yalcouye put the ball in the back of the net, but the officiating crew disallowed the score for offside.
Marking his 100th game in charge as Brighton manager, Hurzeler introduced four additional substitutes in an attempt to secure a victory, though the changes disrupted the team's momentum. As the match progressed, Jablonec grew increasingly dangerous and threatened late in the game.
Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen stepped up with crucial saves to turn away dangerous attempts from Jiri Slama and Vakhtang Tchanturishvili. The stalemate extended Brighton's defensive run to five consecutive clean sheets, while the hosts preserved their undefeated home record in European competition.
In a separate incident in Chicago, local law enforcement reported that a 32-year-old woman sustained critical injuries during a shooting in the city's Brighton Park neighborhood on Thursday morning. The victim was riding as a passenger inside a vehicle located in the 2400 block of W. 47th Street at approximately 9:30 a.m. when the violence unfolded.
According to the Chicago Police Department, a gray sedan pulled alongside the victim's car and an unidentified individual opened fire. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she remained in critical condition.
Authorities confirmed that no other injuries were reported from the scene. The suspect vehicle fled the location traveling southbound on Western Avenue, and no suspects were immediately taken into custody as Area One detectives actively continue their investigation.
