Blade Runner 2049 Arrives on Free Streaming as Franchise Expands

The acclaimed science fiction thriller Blade Runner 2049 has officially made the transition to free streaming, arriving on Pluto TV on November 1, 2026. The move follows the film's departure from Paramount+ on October 31, allowing viewers to watch the sequel with virtually no gap in availability.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve and released in 2017, the cyberpunk film stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. Despite receiving widespread critical acclaim, earning an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and capturing Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects, the movie struggled at the box office. It grossed approximately $277.9 million worldwide against a reported production budget between $150 million and $185 million, falling short of the financial break-even point.

Before Villeneuve took on the project, Hollywood heavyweights were considered for the sequel, including Christopher Nolan. A lifelong fan of the original 1982 film who has reportedly watched it more than 100 times, Nolan explained to the Los Angeles Times why he ultimately passed on directing the follow-up.

“There are many films that are so iconic that trying to remake or follow them up would be an overly complicated thing,” Nolan said. Describing Blade Runner 2049 as a real treat, he added, “I love Denis (Villeneuve). He bravely did what he refers to as a ‘suicide mission,’ following a massive film that I love very much. I think he did a great job.”

As the 2017 film finds a new audience on free streaming platforms, the broader franchise is preparing for its next major expansion. Amazon Prime Video is scheduled to release Blade Runner 2099, an eight-episode television miniseries, on November 25, 2026.

Set fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, the upcoming miniseries will feature a cast led by Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer. Original film director Ridley Scott serves as an executive producer, while Silka Luisa acts as showrunner, bringing the neo-noir universe back to screens with a visual style reportedly closer to the original 1982 classic.
