YouTube Experiences Significant Outage Affecting Users Across the United States
The platform acknowledged widespread playback failures, buffering loops, and error messages on Wednesday, October 28.
YouTube faced a major service disruption on Wednesday, October 28, leaving countless users across the United States unable to properly load or watch videos. Downdetector recorded more than 24,000 user-submitted reports at its peak, highlighting widespread frustration with the video-sharing platform.
People attempting to use the site encountered several distinct issues. Many individuals received “Video unavailable” or “An error occurred” messages, while others found their media trapped in endless buffering loops or replaced entirely by black screens where the video player should have been. The technical difficulties impacted both standard YouTube videos and YouTube Shorts.
The disruption appeared on both desktop browsers and mobile applications, though the severity varied among individuals. While some visitors could not play any content, others noted that certain videos managed to load and function normally.
The company's official support account on X, TeamYouTube, acknowledged the technical difficulties shortly after complaints began to surge. “Confirming we're aware and working to fix this,” the support team stated, directing users to the official Help Community for future updates.
In a separate post on its Help Community, YouTube formally categorized the loading troubles as a “Known Issue.” The platform listed multiple symptoms currently affecting the site, including playback errors, sudden loading freezes, and black screens, while inviting users to submit further details about their specific experiences.
Despite acknowledging the widespread disruption, the company has not yet announced an official timeline for when normal service will be fully restored. Representatives have stated that engineers are actively working on a solution, but have not confirmed an estimated recovery time.
Alongside the primary video platform, some users also reported encountering disruptions with YouTube Music and Google Search during the exact same timeframe. Reports cited over 500 complaints concerning YouTube Music and roughly 140 involving Google Search.
Despite the complaints logged by users on external tracking sites, Google's official Workspace Status Dashboard continued to list its corporate services as fully operational during the reported window. The platform has advised affected individuals to monitor TeamYouTube posts on X and the Help Community threads for the latest announcements regarding the service restoration.
