Bears Defeat Seahawks 34-17 Behind Simmons and Sweat
Chicago secures a prime-time victory over Seattle as newly acquired defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons and returning defensive end Montez Sweat dominate the line of scrimmage.
The Chicago Bears cruised to a 34-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football, putting on a dominant defensive display at Lumen Field. The standout performance was anchored by newly acquired All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons and defensive end Montez Sweat, who both wreaked havoc in the opponent's backfield throughout the contest.
Simmons made an immediate splash in his Chicago debut after being acquired from the Tennessee Titans. Playing in his first game outside of Tennessee in his eight-year NFL career, Simmons led the team with six tackles, including a first-quarter sack and a tackle for loss. His presence inside consistently loosened up the line of scrimmage, creating favorable matchups for his new teammates.
Monte Sweat also delivered a stellar performance in his return from a two-game suspension. Benefiting from the heavy attention opponents must now pay to Simmons, Sweat recorded a sack along with three quarterback hits and a tackle for loss. He also had two additional sacks nullified due to penalties called in the secondary.
Reflecting on his reunion with Simmons, whom he previously played with in college, Sweat shared his enthusiasm. "It really just felt great being back with the guys," Sweat said. "Obviously being back with Jeff, bringing back a lot of memories. It felt great."
The defensive pressure made life miserable for Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, who struggled to find rhythm as Chicago held Seattle to just 252 total yards of offense. The Bears shut down the Seahawks on 11 third-down attempts, stopping them 10 times, and limited Seattle to a single successful trip inside the red zone all evening.
A game-sealing sequence arrived with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Simmons and Sweat converged to force Darnold out of the pocket. Defensive lineman Austin Booker tipped Darnold's pass, which deflected directly into the hands of teammate James Lynch for an interception. Lynch returned the ball deep into Seattle territory, setting up a quick touchdown run by running back D'Andre Swift that pushed the lead to 17 points and effectively sealed the win.
Despite the dominant prime-time performance against the defending champions, Bears head coach Ben Johnson urged caution, noting that the victory should not be viewed as a definitive statement game. Nonetheless, the defensive transformation was palpable as Chicago finally showcased the disruptive, game-wrecking defensive line general manager Ryan Poles has sought to build since taking over in 2022.
