Bayern Munich Faces Arsenal Without Joshua Kimmich Following Family Bereavement
The German international has been granted compassionate leave, compounding selection challenges for Bayern ahead of their Champions League match.
Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich will miss Wednesday night's crucial Champions League fixture against Premier League champions Arsenal following a bereavement in his close family. The Bundesliga club confirmed that the German international has been granted compassionate leave after missing the final training session for personal reasons.
The absence of the midfielder creates a significant obstacle for the Bavarian giants as they pursue their first European title in seven years. Kimmich's unavailability adds to a growing list of squad concerns for head coach Vincent Kompany ahead of the match at the Allianz Arena.
Kompany is already managing multiple roster hurdles. Winger Michael Olise is suspended following his red card last week, attacker Jamal Musiala is sidelined with a thigh injury, and veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer remains questionable due to a foot issue. Additionally, Kompany has been dealing with an illness that kept him away from his pre-match press conference, though he is still expected to direct the team from the touchline.
In an official statement posted on X, the club addressed the situation by requesting privacy for the player and his relatives. "On behalf of the family, we ask that his privacy and grief be respected, and that further inquiries and reporting be refrained from. We send our deepest condolences to Joshua Kimmich and his loved ones," the statement read.
Despite these personnel challenges, the German title holders have maintained a strong domestic run, remaining unbeaten across six Bundesliga fixtures. Their campaign includes securing progress to the DFB-Pokal second round with a 4-1 victory over second-tier Osnabruck, alongside a recent 6-1 thrashing of RB Leipzig highlighted by a hat-trick from Luis Diaz.
European competition has presented a few hurdles for the squad, beginning with a 5-0 win over Bodo/Glimt followed by a 3-3 draw against Viking where a late equalizer denied them victory. Even so, Bayern boasts a formidable home record in the Champions League, having lost only one of their last 31 fixtures in Munich while securing 24 wins and six draws.
Meanwhile, managerial movements continue to shape German football landscape across various divisions. Recent dismissals and coaching changes in the professional leagues have left several tacticians without clubs, including Daniel Scherning, who previously held coaching roles at clubs such as Osnabruck, Wehen Wiesbaden, and Braunschweig.
As Bayern prepares to host Arsenal, the team will look to rely on their historical home advantage to overcome their current absentees and secure a vital win in the European tournament.
