The Tampa Bay Lightning travel to Denver to face the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night at Ball Arena, with puck drop scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Tampa Bay enters the matchup as one of the hottest teams in the NHL, winning seven of its first nine games to open the 2026-27 season.

The Lightning arrive in Colorado riding a three-game winning streak, highlighted by an impressive 6-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in their most recent outing on Tuesday. During that game, forward Anthony Cirelli scored twice before exiting after the second period. However, Lightning head coach and team staff received good news as forward Anthony Cirelli is set to return to the lineup for Friday's contest against the Avalanche.

Tampa Bay's offensive attack has been led by Nikita Kucherov, who has accumulated 13 points through nine games. With a three-point performance in Tuesday's win over Vegas, Kucherov tied Steven Stamkos at 1,137 career points for the Lightning franchise record. Meanwhile, Brandon Hagel has contributed seven goals to rank second on the team in points with 12, and goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy continues to anchor the defense.

Colorado has experienced a more inconsistent start to the campaign, entering Friday with a 5-4-1 record after dropping three of their last four games. The Avalanche most recently fell 4-3 to the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center on Tuesday, despite two goals from Artturi Lehkonen and a tally from Gabriel Landeskog. Avalanche Head Coach Jared Bednar emphasized the need for a reset following their road trip, stating, "It's just regroup time. Go back to what we were trying to do before these two games, and that's play to our identity, the pace of the game, the competitiveness and work that's also needed to sort of set up that pace. And then trying to sustain it for as long as we can."

Despite their recent struggles, the Avalanche boast dangerous weapons on both ends of the ice. Nathan MacKinnon leads the team offensively with 16 points and has generated a league-high volume of shots on goal at home, while Cale Makar remains one of the top-performing defensemen in the league with 11 points.

Friday's game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the two franchises for the 2026-27 season, with the second scheduled in Tampa on February 13th. The teams share playoff history as well, having met in the 2022 Stanley Cup Final where Colorado defeated Tampa Bay in six games. For the Lightning, Friday's game also marks the opening half of a back-to-back set, as they will travel to face the Utah Mammoth on Saturday to conclude their road trip.
