Argentinos Juniors defeats Atlético Tucumán and matches Boca Juniors on top
The victory secures Argentinos Juniors a spot in the 2027 Copa Libertadores and keeps them in the race for the league title.
Argentinos Juniors defeated Atlético Tucumán 2-1 on Monday at the Monumental José Fierro stadium during the 15th round of the 2026 Torneo Clausura. With this crucial away victory, the team coached by Nicolás Diez reached 60 points in the annual standings, tying Boca Juniors at the top of the table heading into the final matchday of the season.
The visiting side took control early in the match, opening the scoring at the 29-minute mark. Matías Giménez Rojas received the ball near the area and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike that sailed directly into the top corner, leaving the local goalkeeper with no chance.
Before the end of the first half, Argentinos Juniors doubled its lead due to a defensive miscue from the hosts. At the 42nd minute, Atlético Tucumán defender Clever Ferreira miscommunicated with his goalkeeper while attempting a headed backpass, accidentally sending the ball into his own net to make it 2-0.
During the second half, the home side pushed to change the dynamic and generated several scoring opportunities, including a shot that hit the goalpost. Atlético Tucumán eventually found a breakthrough four minutes before regular time when referee Yael Falcón Pérez awarded a penalty kick following a foul inside the area.
Substitute Alexis Canelo calmly converted the penalty to narrow the deficit to 2-1 for the hosts. However, despite the late push from Atlético Tucumán, which included the expulsion of Luciano Vallejo after receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time, Argentinos successfully managed to hold on to their lead until the final whistle.
The outcome leaves Argentinos Juniors with 31 points in Zona B and mathematically secures their qualification for the 2027 Copa Libertadores. Meanwhile, Atlético Tucumán remains with 17 points in tenth place, having already lost any chances of reaching the playoffs.
As the tournament heads into its final weekend, the battle for the annual title remains intensely contested. Argentinos Juniors will host Huracán at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium, needing a victory and a stumble from Boca Juniors against Defensa y Justicia to claim the championship.
