Alexander Zverev Faces Domestic Violence Allegations and Proposed Penal Order
The professional tennis player denies allegations brought by his former partner as prosecutors request a penal order involving a substantial fine.
Professional tennis player Alexander Zverev is facing intense scrutiny following allegations of domestic violence filed against him by his former partner, Brenda Patea. The Berlin prosecutor's office has initiated an investigation into the 26-year-old athlete on suspicion of bodily harm.
As part of the ongoing legal proceedings, prosecutors have requested a penal order against the Olympic champion. According to reports, the proposed financial penalty involves 90 daily rate units of 5,000 euros each, which would amount to a total fine of 450,000 euros.
The calculation of the daily rate is based on an estimated monthly gross income of 150,000 euros, translating to roughly 1.8 million euros annually. Criminal defense attorney Burkhard Benecken commented to the press that this calculation is a very friendly estimation, noting that Zverev's actual income is likely considerably higher.
Benecken added that keeping the total under 91 daily rate units is a deliberate choice. Staying beneath this threshold means the penalty will not appear on a standard certificate of good conduct, allowing the accused to avoid an official criminal record and increasing the likelihood that the penalty might be accepted.
Despite this, reports indicate that Zverev intends to contest the penal order and file an objection within the mandatory 14-day window. Should he proceed with the challenge, the case will likely head to court, bringing him face-to-face with the mother of his young daughter.
This is not the first time the tennis star has faced such accusations. In late 2020, another former partner, Olga Sharypova, publicly alleged that Zverev had choked her with a pillow and pushed her against a wall during an incident. Those previous investigations were ultimately dropped by authorities.
Addressing the current situation, Zverev firmly denied the allegations during a press appearance. "I completely reject the allegations," Zverev stated. "My lawyers are taking care of the matter. I will not say anything more about it."
