Rafael Jódar makes historic top 10 debut at the Paris Masters
The young Spanish tennis player achieves a record-breaking ascent into the top tier of the ATP rankings as he chases a spot in the season-ending finals.
Spanish tennis player Rafael Jódar officially entered the top 10 of the ATP rankings, achieving a historic milestone just 287 days after making his professional debut at the Australian Open. The 20-year-old athlete surpassed the previous speed record for breaking into the top tier, which was previously held by Brazilian player Gustavo Kuerten between 1996 and 1997.
Jódar secured his place among the elite despite a second-round exit at the ATP 500 tournament in Basel against Monegasque player Valentin Vacherot. Following the rankings update, the ATP corrected a points calculation error involving Australian player Alex de Minaur, keeping Jódar positioned strongly in the race for the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
Reflecting on his rapid rise, Jódar emphasized the importance of maintaining perspective and staying grounded. He shared advice from his father, stating, My father tells me to be humble and not to believe I am someone that, in reality, I am not. He also expressed gratitude for his father's constant support and presence in his player box throughout his debut professional season.
The 2026 season has brought significant achievements for the young Spaniard, including his first professional ATP title on clay in Marrakech. Jódar credited his fast adaptation to the professional circuit to his mental resilience, noting that his approach of taking each match and tournament one step at a time allowed him to compete successfully against the world's best players.
As the tennis calendar reaches its final stretch, Jódar is competing at the Paris Masters, the last ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season, held at La Défense Arena. In his opening match, Jódar defeated Chilean player Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the second round where he will face Casper Ruud or J.M. Cerúndolo.
A strong performance in the French capital is critical for Jódar's hopes of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. While acknowledging the difficulty of securing a spot during his debut professional year, Jódar views the experience as valuable preparation for future seasons, noting that consistent improvement remains his primary long-term objective.
Meanwhile, the top of the ATP rankings saw a major shift as German player Alexander Zverev officially claimed the world number one ranking for the first time in his career. Zverev's rise to the top position coincides with a period of intense competition at the conclusion of the tennis season as players battle for remaining titles and qualification spots.
