Afghanistan Trails Zimbabwe by 391 Runs After Day Two of First Test
Afghanistan reached 113 for 1 at stumps in response to Zimbabwe's massive first-innings total of 504 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
At the end of Day Two, Afghanistan reached 113 for 1 after 35 overs, trailing Zimbabwe by 391 runs in the first Test match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Zimbabwe dominated the opening sessions of the match, adding to their overnight score from 326 for 5 to eventually post a commanding total of 504 runs in 134.3 overs before being bowled out.
Despite Zimbabwe's imposing total, Afghanistan mounted a spirited fightback with the bat to stay firmly in the contest. Opening batter Sediqullah Atal capitalized on early missed chances in the field—having been given two lives in the very first over—to record a well-earned half-century.
Atal finished the day's play unbeaten with 54 runs from 104 balls, displaying resilience despite facing difficult batting conditions under fading light. Toward the end of the day, a short delivery from Blessing Muzarabani struck Atal on the helmet badge, prompting a mandatory concussion test by the team physio, while another short ball later thudded into his forearm.
Partnering Atal at the crease was debutant Rahmanullah, who delivered an impressive performance to bring up a half-century on his Test debut. Rahmanullah ended the day not out with 50 runs from 80 deliveries, anchoring a strong 99-run partnership for the second wicket alongside Atal following the early dismissal of Abdul Malik.
Abdul Malik was the sole wicket to fall for Afghanistan, caught by wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga off the bowling of Newman Nyamhuri for just 2 runs in the sixth over. Since that breakthrough, Zimbabwe's bowling attack has struggled to pierce through the resolute Afghan defense as light readings and fading visibility occasionally interrupted play.
The scoreboard could have reflected a vastly different narrative had Zimbabwe successfully converted their fielding opportunities early in the innings. Instead, the missed chances allowed Afghanistan's young batters to settle in and build a solid foundation heading into the middle stages of the Test.
Play will resume on Day Three with Afghanistan looking to narrow the massive first-innings deficit further and establish enduring partnerships. Observers note that if pitch and lighting conditions remain consistent, bowlers from both sides could face another challenging day on the field.
