Afghanistan and Zimbabwe Face Off in Sharjah for Two-Match Test Series

Both teams look to gain momentum as they compete in a historic venue for the first of two Test matches.

Afghanistan and Zimbabwe are set to meet in Sharjah on Thursday for the first of two Test matches. The series marks a return to the venue for the format after a decade-long hiatus, with the last Test match at the stadium occurring in 2016. Since that time, the ground has primarily hosted white-ball cricket, serving as the site for 76 matches.

Both nations currently remain outside of the World Test Championship, though upcoming ICC meetings are expected to address potential expansion of the tournament. For Zimbabwe, the match follows a schedule that included ten Tests in 2025 and only one in 2026. Conversely, Afghanistan is currently navigating its busiest calendar year to date, with this series representing their fourth Test of 2026.

The team lineups for the opening Test reflect significant absences for both sides. Zimbabwe will be led by captain Brian Bennett, as Richard Ngarava is sidelined with a back injury and veteran Sikandar Raza is unavailable. The team is expected to provide a debut opportunity to Antum Naqvi, a Belgian-born batter who has recorded six centuries in his first-class career. Zimbabwe's squad also relies on the experience of Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine, and Graeme Cremer.

Afghanistan enters the series without key players Rashid Khan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Ibrahim Zadran. Despite these absences, the team is led by Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi, following a recent draw against Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi. The squad is expected to feature Qais Ahmed and Zia-ur-Rehman to capitalize on the expected pitch conditions.

The Sharjah pitch is anticipated to be a significant factor in the series. Experts describe the surface as slow with low bounce and a sluggish outfield, conditions that are expected to make scoring difficult. With temperatures forecasted to exceed 36 degrees, the physical demands on the players will be high, and spinners are expected to play a critical role in the match outcome.

While Afghanistan is viewed as the slight favorite to win the series opener, Zimbabwe carries momentum from winning their last two completed Test matches. The outcome remains uncertain, with a tight, low-scoring contest expected as both teams look to strengthen their standing in the international format.
