The 166th running of the Melbourne Cup takes place on Tuesday at Flemington Racecourse, bringing together a 24-horse field for Australia's most famous 3200-meter staying test. Scheduled as Race 7 with a 3:00 p.m. AEDT start, the A$10.2 million race serves as the centerpiece of the Victoria Racing Club's spring racing carnival.

Track conditions could play a critical role in the outcome. Track manager Liam O'Keeffe reported that expected rainfall is projected to push the racing surface into the soft range. European raiders may have a distinct advantage in these conditions, as they frequently encounter rain-affected going in their home countries.

Jockey Harry Coffey has been officially cleared to ride Shockletz after undergoing surgery on Sunday for a broken collarbone sustained in a fall on Derby Day. Racing Victoria stewards confirmed his fitness following an assessment by chief medical officer Dr Ben Barresi, allowing Coffey to fulfill his engagements.

The international contingent features eight visitors from Britain and Ireland, alongside 10 northern hemisphere-bred runners. Leading stables maintain a strong presence, with Australian trainer Ciaron Maher saddling a record seven runners, while Irish trainer Joseph O'Brien brings a formidable team of five contenders.

Among the leading market fancies is Point Of Law, who drew barrier 9 and has attracted significant attention. Meanwhile, notable international contenders include Goodie Two Shoes, the runner-up in the 2025 Melbourne Cup, and the European imports Sons and Lovers and Hopewell Rock, which finished second in the prestigious Ebor Handicap.

Defending history remains a theme as Knight’s Choice returns after securing a memorable upset victory in the 2024 edition. Drawn in barrier 2 with jockey Robbie Dolan aboard, the Australian-bred stayer aims to recapture his winning form despite carrying five kilograms more than his victorious run two years ago.

Several dark horses are also drawing attention from punters seeking value outside the favorites. Soul Of Spain, trained by Chris Waller, boasts proven two-mile stamina after finishing second in the Sydney Cup and has drawn favorably in barrier 5, while Zakouma enters with local Flemington staying form and a lightweight of 52 kilograms.
