Wrexham Earns 2-0 Victory Over Championship Leaders Middlesbrough
George Thomason and Ollie Rathbone scored second-half goals to secure a morale-boosting win for Phil Parkinson's side at the Racecourse Ground.
Wrexham produced a significantly improved performance to defeat Championship leaders Middlesbrough 2-0 at the Racecourse Ground on Wednesday night. Goals in the second half from George Thomason and substitute Ollie Rathbone earned the Welsh club a crucial victory, lifting them up to 16th place in the league standings.
The hosts bounced back in style following successive away defeats and a lackluster showing against Sheffield United days earlier. Phil Parkinson's team kept their first clean sheet in nine matches and handed Middlesbrough just their second defeat in 14 league fixtures this term, despite entering the contest on an 11-game unbeaten run.
Middlesbrough entered the match without the league's top scorer, Will Lankshear, who missed the game due to an injury. The 21-year-old striker had previously accumulated 15 goals in all competitions over 16 games, a total matching Wrexham's entire team output prior to kickoff. Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg noted that his side deeply felt the absence of their primary forward.
After a tightly contested first half that saw limited scoring opportunities, Wrexham increased the pressure after the restart. Lewis O'Brien briefly thought he had scored within the opening minute of the second half when he netted a rebound, but the effort was overturned by an offside flag.
The deadlock was broken in the 71st minute when Kieffer Moore nodded the ball into the path of Thomason, who fired a powerful strike from outside the 18-yard box past goalkeeper Radek Vitek. Substitute Rathbone sealed the result in the 84th minute by heading in a floated cross from O'Brien at the back post.
Reflecting on the performance, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson praised his players' discipline and physical effort. "Tonight we were very structured without the ball. The gaps and spaces were tight so we could get up to the ball and take the ball off them and be physical," Parkinson stated.
Despite the loss, Middlesbrough remains two points clear at the top of the Championship table. Manager Kim Hellberg acknowledged the difficulty of the match, stating, "It was a tough game. A lot of fighting, physical things. Very few chances in the game in general... it wasn't our night."
