Winnipeg Jets Trade Star Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck to New Jersey Devils
The blockbuster NHL trade follows a months-long dispute and a suspension that kept the three-time Vezina Trophy winner off the ice this season.
The Winnipeg Jets have traded superstar goaltender Connor Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils, according to reports by NHL insiders including Darren Dreger and Elliotte Friedman. The high-profile transaction concludes a turbulent period for the franchise netminder, who spent his entire career in Winnipeg and requested a trade months ago.
The 33-year-old goaltender publicly demanded a move in late August after growing frustrated with the team's trajectory. Because he failed to report to training camp in September, the Jets suspended him. That suspension was scheduled to conclude on Friday, October 23, resulting in nearly a million dollars in lost salary for the player during his absence.
According to former NHL goaltender and analyst Kevin Weekes, the reported return package heading to Winnipeg features goaltender Nico Daws, forward Dawson Mercer, two draft picks, and Swedish forward Alexander Command, who was selected in the first round of the draft last summer. Neither team had officially announced the complete trade details as of late Friday.
Hellebuyck brings an impressive resume to New Jersey, having captured the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender three times, in 2020, 2024, and 2025. Furthermore, he backstopped Team USA to an Olympic gold medal last February, posting a remarkable 1.18 goals-against average and a 95.6 save percentage across five tournament games.
Despite his dominant regular-season performances, Hellebuyck has faced scrutiny regarding his playoff numbers. Over 58 career postseason appearances, he holds a 2.90 goals-against average and a 90.3 save percentage, with his save percentage dipping below 90 in each of his three previous playoff runs.
For the New Jersey Devils, acquiring the veteran goaltender addresses a glaring need as they look to cement their status as Stanley Cup contenders. The Devils currently sit in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a 6-4-0 record, relying previously on a goaltending tandem of veteran Jake Allen and young netminder Nico Daws.
The blockbuster deal could also have ripple effects across the NHL trade market. Rumors have intensified surrounding Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin, who recently added the New Jersey Devils to his personal trade list, potentially creating a connection through international play with his American teammate Hellebuyck as the league's trade landscape heats up early in the season.
